Wife drove in 4 low for a few miles

I am beside myself to say the least. No point in asking why she did it, there is no good answer. Just stupid /$%/" and it won't happen again.

Anyway, how much damage, if any, would be done in a 3 mile jaunt in 4 low? Approximately 1 mile would have been on ice/snow. Probably never broke 40 mph.

I have test driven the truck on the highway in 2wd with no problems or mysterious sounds. I tried the 4h and 4low on the ice and they seem to work perfect - no groans or weird sounds.

09 crew 4x4 5.4

any comments would be great - even if they urge me to trade the truck in.

Should be no problems for the truck at all. 90% of the people don't use 4x4 in their trucks at all. Your truck is designed to use 4x4 for many many miles.

It's probably just broke in really well.

I wouldn't give it a second thought, especially if you want to remain married.

If you are really concerned, buy an extended warranty if it's not too late.

Back in the early 70's a pal of mine and myself drove his 1970 VW Beetle thru a whole tank of gas in 3rd gear(they had 4) on the expressway while on our way to Key West.

We did wonder why it only got 18mpg that tank when it usually got 30mpg.

That was some good SUGERCUBE LSD.

Good reason to tell her you are trading it in on a new one and she needs to make the payments.

Hey, who amongst us has not done some stupid Sh!& to our vehicles. I discovered that master brake cylinders on a 65' Chevy were very expensive after putting automatic trans-fluid into one by mistake (long story). Then there was my brand freak'in new 88' Ram Charger with 40 miles on the odometer that I backed into the garage, tearing off the driver's door in the process (came close to throwing up on that one).

Other than using more gas you should be fine. These trucks aren't made out of paper mache.

Thanks guys. Def makes me feel better. I figured some damage would have been done. I did visit the Ford dealer last night and have made an offer on a 2011 XLT 5.0 Screw 4x4. They still need to accept the deal however. The next hurdle is to actually find me a truck optioned out properly which looks like a difficult task because there are only a few 2011's left around here.

I'm won't be disappointed if the deal falls through because I love my current rig even if it does have a couple of bruises on it :-)

most modern 4x4 you can go something like 55mph in 4 low and doesnt matter. They arent like 4x4 of the past. I wouldnt worry about it

I have just around 1300 on my new 11 5.0 SCREW, love it, love it, love it...Engine sound just makes me giggle.

Taking the family to Texas to see the clan this weekend. Really looking forward to the 1000 mile drive now.

55mph in 4low? I don't know if there's enough RPMs in a truck for that....

To the OP, I doubt she would have made it to 40mph in 4low, that truck would have been screaming way before it ever got there, she'd be lucky to make it to 35 without hitting a rev-limiter.

Just think of it as if you were driving a few miles in 2wd @ high RPM, pretty much the same thing. A bit hard on the engine, but I wouldn't worry too much about the trans or xfer case.

55 mph in 4lo would be around 3500 to 4000 rpm in 6th, depending on axle ratio and tire size. Transfer case ratio is 2.64.

Thanks again guys. GLC I have the 3.55 lsd and 32.1 tires if that helps your equation.

JNTIBS - the neighbour says to me yesterday what is wrong with your truck because when your wife took off it was roaring revving away, sounded pretty wild!
