2011 f150 5.0 mpg

I have had my 2011 F150 SCAB for just over 2 months now and just love it.
It has the 5.0 L V-8 with the 3.55 Lmt Slip rear end.
The only mod would be a BAK Flip F1 Tonneau Cover that would effect MPG.
I took a trip out west about 200 miles each way, about 80 miles on the way out was at 80-85 to make up some time, the rest was at 70 MPH, I filled up just before I hit the highway and filled up when I got back and got 19.6 MPG, I am confident I would have gotten 20+ had the entire trip been at 70 MPH.

Just wanted to pass this info along to would be F150 buyers.

Happy New Year All.

Christmas, I went from Brownsboro to Damon, 254 miles. It's about half 2 lane and about half Interstate. I ran 70 to 75 most of the way, and had the cruise set at 70 on the Interstate. I have the Screw with 3.55s and averaged 21.2 for that trip. My best to date is 22.7 and my worst on a trip is 19.5. I have discovered that a headwind really makes a lot of difference. If I'm going into a 12-15 mph wind, it will knock off as much as 2 mpg. I get my best mileage at 55 to 65, but just can't go that slow. I have almost 14,000 miles on it, and the Fuel Economy average has never been reset and it reads 19.4 mpg for that 14,000 miles.

I'm a bit disappointed in the MPG you guys are posting.
Reason is, that i will be ordering my 2012 Plat 5.0L tomorrow and was hoping to get better MPG with it then my 2010 150 4x4 5.4L 3.55, which is giving me 19.4 average.
Not quite sure yet if I'll go with the 3.55 or 3.73. If i chose the 3.73, i should expect to get less then you....

That is great mileage for a 5.4, 4x4. I could get better if I held it to 60-65. Just can't do that. There are times when passing that I exceed 80 mph. I am getting those averages without driving for fuel economy. I'm happy with it as I came from a 5.4 averaging from 15.5 to 16.

my best average to date is 19.9 with an overall of 18.4 (15,000) on the trip computer and fuelly. This would be better if I hadn't pulled a trailer the times that I did.

I started out at 18.5mpg with my 2011 xlt 4wd xcab 3:73s. With the added topper shell and few tools I dropped to 16.5mpg. Now with winter blend fuel I am into the 15's... I hope it comes back next summer.

Smile Better than my old 98 Lariat

I had a 1998 Lariat with the 5.4L I would get about 13.5 around town and 18 on the open highway. The 19.6 I got had about 15 miles of in town driving the middle of the trip, and had to "Hot Rod" some and show the Step Son what my New truck would do. My new 2011 will out run my old 1998, and is a much better truck, just needs some sway bars to improve the handling, and some exhaust to breath a little better. This new truck I have been getting about 15.5-16.5 mpg around town. She's only got 2,500 miles on her right now.

Thanks

The problem is this, for one real world is never what is advertised. Plus everybody is different. peoples driving habits, rear ends, 4x4 or not. tire size and air pressure, what gas was used. tempertature, elevation, etc. For anyt half ton truck to get close to 20 is a pretty good thing.

Just got back from a roundtrip from Phoenix to Amarillo, 10.5 hours on the road, 738 miles one way. 17.0 mpg both ways. Cruise was set to 81 for 80% of the trip. All interstate.

Only 2300 miles on the truck tho. I am hoping the break in period is almost over and the computer will lean me out a bit so I can increase that mileage.

2011 SCREW 4x4, no cover, 5.0

If you will set the cruise at 68, you will pick up about 2 mpg, maybe more.

Copied this from this article
http://www.trucktestdigest.com/axle%20ratios.htm

The reason is aerodynamic drag from the truck’s frontal area, not the gear ratio, is the major contributing factor in fuel economy.

According to the EPA, during the highway test cycle where the average speed is 48 mph, 54% of the engine’s power is used to overcome aerodynamic drag. Drive faster and the engine has to work even harder to push through the air and consumes more fuel in doing so.

“The best fuel economy for the typical truck or SUV is cruising right around 40mph. The EPA test cycle for the highway fuel economy number averages 48mph with a top speed of 60mph,” explains Clark.

“A good example of how drag affects fuel economy is a truck that has a 21mpg highway EPA number. Drive at a 10-percent higher average speed (53mph) and drag causes fuel economy to fall about 1.5mpg. Average 60mph and mileage will drop another 1.5mpg. Run just above70mph and now fuel economy is less than 14mpg instead of 21mpg.”

So, if fuel economy is of a real concern, watch your speed. If performance is your goal, watch the axle ratio you buy.

I alway's drive 48 mph to receive my 21 mpg.

I'm all for clean air and a healthier place to live. Although, the EPA is worthless Government entity. They should concentrate on more accurate/real world testing before they push for a mileage increase.
