I just thought I would share a interesting article on the 2014 F-150. Looks like Ford is creating a lighter F150 using aluminum panels instead of steel.

only thing with alumnum is, does it resist dents as much as steel does. Repair cost to weld and fix aluminum might be higher

 

New technology for Ford ! Well aluminum isn't steel so there are lots of things to change and learn .But they're serious in lightening the F-150s .Just so much you can do with high strength steels though the atitude of bigger and bigger that the public has can be dealt with just so much with steel.
Audi has done a lot with aluminum, but wait wasn't the Bugatti 1937 Atlantic a big user of aluminum ? Go back in your history books --1916 Marmon --engine , gear box housing ,body parts , etc were aluminum , when most people hadn't even heard of the metal !!! The big boost for aluminum was in the 1930s when it was used for aircraft.
But by the time Ford wants to use it perhaps polymers and fiber composite will be ready !
