2012 Ecoboost questions

I ordered a new 2012 ecoboost, Lariat SuperCrew, 4X4, 145 wheelbase shortbed. I got the Lariat package, chrome package, center console/shifter, and also upgraded to the Sony 700W stereo, I didn't do the trailer brake. Ordered Nov 28th timeframe, it's showing arrival date of the week of Jan 16th. Waiting is killing me but that's another story. I did have a couple of questions for everyone:

What kind of 'real' gas mileage are folks seeing with the ecoboost?

Does anyone know for sure that my shortbed will have a standard 36gal fuel tank? I hear conflicting stories because it's the 145 wheelbase.

Any input would be great while I'm waiting. Thanks.

I have a 2011 Screw EB FX4. I have it leveled front and rear and running 305/65/R18 BFG A/T's 10 ply. I am getting 12.5-13. But you have to consider I am running bigger heavier tires. I have seen 14 once. Thats all city driving though. A friend of mine is getting 15 out of the same truck, just stock tires. According to the F-150 Brochure, it states the 36 gal is standard on 4x4 applications with EcoBoost. At least thats what I got from reading it.

Christ. I'm getting 10-12mpg's depending on driving style and winter additive. 13 or better with the non-ethanol 87 with my 04 3.73 5.4 , 4" lift on 35" Toyo M/T. When I put my stock wheels back on during winter I still get decent mileage.

I thought the EB was supposed to get good gas mileage?

I'm as stock as they come. I'm getting 16.3. Almost exclusively city driving.

Picked up my 2012 on 12/24. It's also a 145" 4x4 and has the 36 gallon tank - yours should also.

Only have a little over 500 miles on mine and am averaging 15-15.5 MPG per the on board computer. Only change I have made was swapping the Pirelli ties for Michelins. Mine is a 3.55 rear end.

Very happy with the truck overall. Mine was 8 weeks order to delivery. It will be worth the wait when you get it!

CARLSCHMARL2- Yes The EB is going to get good mileage in stock form. But as soon as you put a bigger/heavier tire on the truck, the mileage goes down.

The EB's gas mileage from all the reports on this forum are all over the board. Some are getting the advertised mileage, some slightly above, and some drastically below. I still believe there are minor kinks to work out on the motor to get them all performing closer to the same than they currently are.

Im getting 18 mpg mixed and 14.5 city. Ive hit high 21 mpg highway. To get good mileage you need to stay off the turbos and thats hard to do. My 14.5 mpg also comes at outside temps in the teens to mid 30s by me. Im happy with the ecoboost and the mpg`s.

I just came back from a 2000 mile trip. The first 100 miles were against a strong headwind, westbound on the PA turnpike, with its share of hills. I averaged about 14.2 with the cruise set at 68. Headwind and hills are mileage killers with these trucks. Then I turned south on I-81 through the hills of West Virginia and Virginia. I got about 17, varying the cruise control as the speed limits varied from 55 to 70, always slightly over. Then I cut over on I-77 and I-26 to I-95 where things flattened out and I started averaging about 19 with the cruise mostly on 71MPH. On a 48 mile flat stretch of road in Florida with one or two traffic lights and a couple of stop signs, I got 20.8 MPG with the cruise set at 61MPH. The point of all this is to illustrate how varying conditions, speed and terrain can impact the mileage one gets with the ecoboost. For the whole round trip I averaged 18.2MPG hand calculated. That was loaded with 2 adults, 2 children, luggage, and Christmas presents, plus my Boston Terrier.

I did the same trip many times with a similarly outfitted 5.4L 2010 Lariat screw with 3.73 gears and the average was about 16.9. Best I ever got with the 5.4L on that trip was a 70 mile stretch that averaged 19.2.

My local yocal driving, where I sit and wait for traffic lights sometimes 2 or 3 times before getting through the intersection, waiting behind numerous left turns, and stop signs that seem to always be strategically located at the bottom of hills, yields me an average of about 14 MPG. Still better than my old 5.4L in the same conditions. I usually got about 11.5 MPG with the 5.4L in my local driving conditions.

So I don't believe there is really a problem with ecoboost. Mine is capable of the advertised window sticker mileage in the right conditions, fairly flat, lots of long stretches without stopping, lots of hiway, etc.. I just don't live or travel where the conditions are mostly right, except when I'm in Florida.

The other thing that hurts with the ecoboost MPG is that this thing is just so damned much fun to drive that I like to spool up the turbos once in a while. Driving it like a granny to get good gas mileage isn't much fun. Besides, I didn't buy it for MPG, but I still get better MPG than my 5.4L got, and much more torque, and more power. So for me the ecoboost is WIN, WIN, and WIN.
