a majority of people report spikes in mileage after ~3,000 miles

Tonight my manger told me that he was getting rid of his 2011 FX4 EB because of low MPG his truck has 9k and has never got over 14mpg and it runs great. I told him to give it a chance once it brakes in it will get better. I ask him what he was going to trade for and he said a toyota and you know how good they are on fuel lol lol...

Well that sucks.

Going 75 mph towing 6000 lbs i get any where between 8.8-9.5 and if i drop down to 65 and stay easy on the hills i've seen 11.6 mpg. I don't know if my truck is getting broken in or what, but tonight on my 250 mile trip back loaded down with about 300 lbs in the bed and a loaded trailer i could barely tell i had a load behind me and on flat straights in 6th gear the truck would get up to 80 without me noticing and i'd have to slow back down when ever i caught it.

I was reading this post because I have an 02 XL-Sport with 105 plus K on that monster 4.2.... No problems with the truck since new and it is a bit of a poser with not so good power but it works for me.

I looked at the EB and I have read over and over this great mileage increase and I am of the opinion that you have too many moving parts....X2 Turbo for one thing and if one craps the bed outside of warranty. Well I guess it could be a learning curve. And not to mention the higher cost for the motor vise the 5.0

5.0 on the other hand has 32 valves but it is and has been road tested on several platforms in Ford and Lincoln family with millions of miles proof of reliability. And I am referring to the 32 valves and for me I feel much safer since I keep my trucks for 10 plus years between trade ins.

I like the fact I can get more than 400-450 plus miles as well and that is because of the larger tank. I did read a while back that the computer on the EB is set in the 55-60 MPH range and thus those higher numbers on fuel economy. I like to gouge on my ole 4.2 when the opportunity is there.

A few thoughts on the subject.

From what others have posted, it seems to me that you have to drive very conservatively, stay out of the turbos to get close to the Ford advertised mpg with the EB. I can't drive that way, or at least I don't wish to, and I do not tow, so the 5.0 was a better choice for me. I realize the EB has great power for towing, but that is useless to me.

My thinking is that you can get better mpg driving "normal" with the 5.0. Just last night, I had a drive of about 130 miles. For 60 of it, I was on an uninterrupted highway and with the cruise set at 70, averaged 24.3 mpg. On the whole 130 miles, going through several small towns, I averaged 22.4. When driving around Fort Worth, stop and go, in constrction, etc, I get 17.5. I now have 21,900 miles on her and since mile one, have averaged 19.5 mpg.

My boss bought recently bought a Platinum EB and is getting 14.8 running between small towns and 18 on the highway with cruise set at 75. His has the 20" wheels, 4X4, and probably has a 3.73 rear, but he bought into Ford's ad hype and was expecting a lot better. He loves the truck, but it is not getting any better than his 2006 Tundra got, so he is a bit disappointed.

I think you have the 5.0 "coyote" confused with a couple of other motors that ford built. FWIW the 3.5 eco shows up in many other ford platforms.

Both motors are really fun, go drive them.

The current 5.o is no older or proven than the EB. It is much different than the 5.0 of the past. Either way an engine less of turbos or a blower probably will live longer if longevity is your concern.

As far as MPG, people bought into Ford advertising tricks. Theres tons of guys saying I dont get 23mg, well ford never advertised the EB at 23MPG, EB 4x4 gets 21mpg on the high way, and 15 city. When they say 15 city that is average in a range, i think the EB city range is like 14-17 or something. I get 16 city and 19.6HWY and I think you will find many people will be in that range. People really are ignorant and dont look at the facts before they buy.

Problem is people dont know how to lay off a turbod engine and work the power band on em. I think if you take the same driver with the same trim level truck and have them drive it with both engine they will get roughly the same MPG. Like said above ford f150 beats the competition hands down this year. If you want towing like I did the EB is your match, if not as much as concern save the 1000 bucks and get the 5.o

Or you could get the 6.2 and still get decent mileage. If you can keep your foot out of it.

I have been visiting this forum for about a year or so. I moved from my '02 4.6 SC to a '06 5.4 SC (needed more towing power) and in Feb I bought a '11 5.0, like many of you I never had any problems with my '06, just so many new features and a chance at better mileage. I like the longer bed I thought about the EB, but with my past two models, I figured I couln't go wrong with the 5.0

I've got about 900 miles on the truck now, 99% city driving, but planning a big trip from So Cal to Mt. Rushmore in the summer (Excited to see how it pulls the trailer and overall mileage). Anyway averaging 13.4 on my city MPG.

So far my F-150 just can't be beat, my buddy has a Tundra 5.7, doesn't do any better towing on the HWY, and has a way smaller gas tank, so he has to stop for gas so much sooner.

I love my new 5.0

Well Fords have never been known for mileage. I've owned a Ford almost as long as I've been on this earth and wouldn't seriously buy anything else in a truck. I have a Camry and it gets killer mileage (33 plus) with a 2.4 liter and I run 75 plus to Dallas to Little Rock weekly.

About the 3.5 liter it has proven itself in ford platforms, but like I think too many moving parts and I have a problem with being deep in it.

I guess overall with Hiway speeds are what they are and Ford does its analysis at 55 then you get a lot of "other" numbers than what you might have hoped for.....

I will get the 5.0 over the 3.7 because I figure if I am going to **** into the wind I'd rather get soaked than dribbled on.

I have the XLT with 3.55s, 18" wheels and I think the tires are 265/60/18. Whatever the XLT with chrome package comes with. I am changing the oil every 5,000 miles or so and it uses from 1/2 to 3/4 of a quart between changes.
