09' FX4 Problems

Hey all, my 09' FX4 is having a few issues. It has 38,000 miles on it and just had new 33" Toyo M/T's and 18" XD Monsters put on today! Super pumped, I will post pics tomorrow. But for now, here is whats going on.

1) When rolling to a slow stop the transmission, more often than not, makes a heavy clunk as it shifts gears. Is there any way to fix this?

2) When turning sometimes, i am feeling a slight pop feel in the steering wheel. Any clue as to what may be causing that?

3) When I am coasting and I lightly press down on the gas peddle, I can hear this kind of chirping / continuous fast clicking noise coming from the passenger side of the motor (or at least thats where it sounds like it is coming from)

If you guys could steer me in the right direction as to what the fixes are for all these i would really appreciate it! Thanks y'all!

1. a PCM/transmission reflash may fix that. My 09 does that occasionally but I never took it in.

2. My 09 just started doing this too, seems like the steering wheel is loose or something.

3. Could be the cam phasers, they were known to make clicking sounds from the passenger side of the 5.4 motor. This goes back to 2004.

My truck is all stock with just 17,500 miles.

they should be able to fix the cam phasers, I think the fix includes new parts. Ask them if they are aware of this issue/noise on the 5.4 motors (they should be). Hopefully you have an extended warranty to cover all this?

Sure keep us posted, I want to hear abou the popping steering wheel fix.

There is a TSB for the transmission clunk. I had 'driveline slack' removed and my clunk on my '09 went completely away.

Isn't it amazing how issues like this surface just after your warranty expires?

Update: So last week I bought an extended warranty for the truck. Also, in the last two weeks my family has bought 3 brand new F150's from this dealer (One was a raptor, one for my dad and my two brothers bought FX4's like mine) so I sat down today with the service manager for about 30 minutes and basically explained to him that his service guys have been ****in me around for the past year and I never seem to get anything fixed. I told him that obviously we are a very loyal customer to this dealership in that we now have bought FOUR F150's from them in the past year. I told him the three issues I was having, what i think the fix is for them (I did my research), and told him that I don't want the truck back until everything is 100% fixed. I said I don't care if you have to replace the entire transmission and the motor, I want it fixed.

Will update you guys once I hear back from the service manager about the diagnosis but I think we all need closure once and for all as it relates to these three very common issues we are all having with the trucks.

My 09 FX4 has 54K...
1 - took mine in twice to have the thump fixed it went away a but has recently returned I really don't even notice very often.
2 - haven't experienced this one yet but thanks for the heads up.
3 - I have noticed my engine sounds like a sewing machine... light constant ticking noise when idling. Let me know what they say about this one.

Good luck... I have had a few dealers give me the run around when trying to get things fixed keep us posted!

My engine has the cam phaser noise. Took it to the dealer and they told me Ford won't fix it because its an acceptable noise and will never be a problem....unless you try to sell it (good luck explaining to the potential buyer that its not a problem).

My truck does the same #1 thing as yours. 1st time in, reflashed the tranny. No fix. 2nd time in the dealers said nothing wrong. Funny how the same problem at the same dealer has two different answers. Anyway I was basicly told since I only have 11,000 on it (2010) to just drive it and if something breaks I have a warranty. I even told them about some of the fixes that guys on here have had done to their trucks and that they helped with the tranny bump. Guess they didn't listen. I hope you get yours fixed. Just wondering do you have a 1 or 2 piece drive shaft?

I'm not sure if its the 1 or 2 piece. Just spoke with the service director and he said they did the reflash and the tranny is working properly now. As for the steering, they repacked some bearing with grease that had came loose. Tomorrow, they are replacing the right cam phaser as I asked them to do. Will let you guys know if this is a fix for the ticking noise.
