gas mileage question

Has anyone tried Premium fuel in 4.6 3v motor and did it give better gas mileage?
on Regular I get about 14 in town and maybe 16 on HWY at 70 MPH.
TIA

I wouldn't bother wasting the extra money on it unless the truck is custom tuned for it. Your truck is meant to use 87 octane.

Is there any other mod that might increase the town or high way mileage at a reasonable cost? I added the K/N filter but may better muffler ???

Take the K&N out, put a dry filter back in, and do a Gotts mod to the airbox. Exhaust will not improve the mileage.

A programmer with custom tunes MIGHT improve the mileage.

Don't waste your time, more importantly, your money on mods that are marketed to increase gas mileage. Many of them don't increase anything except for the size of the void in your wallet.

FWIW, 'reasonable cost' can mean anything. We have no idea of knowing what you consider 'reasonable' unless you let us know. Barrett made an excellent suggestion as some people (myself included) reported decent increases in fuel economy after using a programmer. However, a programmer shouldn't be purchased if that's the only factor as it's not a guarantee.

The MPG numbers you posted are pretty typical for that engine. In order to ensure you're getting the maximum performance and efficiency from your engine, be vigilant with all points of maintenance.

If you want better MPG numbers, slow down (change your driving style), trade it for a newer F150 (if it makes sense for your budget, but don't expect much more than 20 MPG, at best, even then), or just buy a Prius.

Most fuel economy mods are either useless or provide such a minimal gain that there is no way you will recoup the cost of the mod.

Electrical fans add maybe .5mpg

The best fuel enono mod is driving cautiously.

Thats crappy fuel economy. I have the same engine and run 87 in my '10 Screw hauling kids and camping/baseball gear. Avg 17.5 in town, over 20 on highway (as high as 22.5 on a 500 mile trip) without any hardware or software mods. I do have a hard bed cover though, but im not saying it makes that much of a difference.

Yes, I've tried premium gas with no noticeable change. I've even tried the "100% Gas" and found its just not worth the price increase. I do every once in awhile get a lousy tank of gas from the same station and my truck knows it.

I use the "Miles per Dollar" calculation when purchasing gas which gives me a better idea of real cost. Ex: 17.5mpg, $3.18/gal = 5.5 miles per dollar. Helps me decide whether its worth it to drive all the way to walmart to get milk and a loaf of bread or the corner store. Come to think of it, I'd rather use my wife's Kia in case the milk spilled.

K&N's do not filter anywhere near as well as paper filters, and the oil has been known to foul the MAF sensor.

Hauling Pyro
what rear gear and tire size do you have on your truck? Funny how the mileage varies so much for supposedly the same truck with the same equipment.
