I have about 12K miles or one year left on my 2010 FX4 warranty. I will be purchasing an extended warranty plan soon. Does anybody have any suggestions on which company to buy from? I was looking at FloodFordesp, they look somewhat decent.

I think extended warranties are an investment rather than a waste of money. For people who lease or only keep their vehicles for a short period of time probably don't need an extended warranty. I keep my vehicles for a long time. I plan on keeping this one for at least 8-10 years or 90K miles. So yes, I feel as if I need an extended warranty.

My truck has had a couple issues but nothing serious. However, this tuesday the truck will be in the shop to have a heating/AC actuator replaced. They have to tear out the dash passenger side to reach the actuator. This would cost a fortune for labor alone if not under warranty.

Understand.... I have been on a streak of not keeping anything longer than 18 months, so for me it makes 0 sense to get one. My folks have them on their Taurus'.

 

When I bought my '05 Screw cab, I bought an extended warranty. The truck had 58,000 miles on it and was way over on the factory warranty. At 61,000 miles, I had to have transmission work done that would have cost me over $600. I also had 2 window motors replaced and had a starter replaced under the warranty. The only thing it wouldn't cover was the battery cables that needed to be replaced in order to get the truck out of the shop. Those were $113 plus about 2 hrs labor to replace. Other than that, I paid a little over $400 for repairs at the dealer for $1500+ in repairs in 3 years and 60,000 miles. To me, it was worth it to buy the warranty. I traded that truck for an '09 F150 Screw cab and bought a warranty with it. I consider it insurance because covered repairs only cost me $100. Otherwise, I'll do the repairs myself.

 

I've been told that if you're going to get an extended warranty, go with the one from Ford. Aftermarket warranties can be a crapshoot on whether or not they cover expenses when the time comes.


So you got $1100 in benefits from the plan in 3 years. How much did it cost you to purchase the warranty in the first place?

 

Indeed. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from the one and only extended 'warranty' I ever bought (or will buy).

That is the same place I bought one for my current truck. Only go with Ford OEM warranties, and Flood Ford has great prices.

 

I spent $1100 on a wrap warranty that extends the bumper to bumper to 5/60k. Its the first time I've added on any extended warranty. I put on so many miles for work that it will only take about 18 months to put 60k on the truck.

Only history will tell if it pays. On my 2009, it would have been a loss (between 36k and 60k I had ball joints replaced, and paid for the microphone TSB that would have been covered under warranty), but on my 04, 01, and 97 it would have been nice to have.

Just bought an extended warranty for my '06 Explorer. As others said, stick with the Ford dealer warranties and shop around knowing what you want years, deductible, etc. I got the best price from Warrick Ford. Also, I would consider going with the premium care, and you can deduct the first day rental off to save a few bucks. Otherwise, the premium care covers about everything. My Explorer has already gone through 2 radiators, 3 wheel bearings and multiple electrical problems all covered by my ext. war. So as of now I've pretty much broken even, but plan on driving this one for another 3 years, so bet is I come out ahead knowing what poor quality some of the parts are, especially the wheel bearings that cost over 300.00 for the dealer to fix. You can buy coverage at anytime, but if your out of warranty you have to have a vehicle inspection and some war. plans charge for this, others don't. And, it gets more expensive if you let your current war. run out.

 

think about it... Ford isn't planning on loosing money, right?

So for the majority of people that buy the extended warranty Ford will make money from them.

Sure, some people come out ahead (thats how insurance works) but for most people you would be better off sticking that money in a savings account so you have it if you need it.
