How does 305 split the difference between 2 285 tires? 305 is 20 mm (nearly an inch) wider...

^ exactly. That tire is way too wide (12.5") for my taste and many other folks. It just makes the tire too heavy and MPG even worse. The hottest ticket for 20's on stock suspension or maybe a level seems to be 275-60-20 which nobody makes a nice LT tire or the 285's.

I see what you're saying now. According to this calculator it was smaller, but it didn't specify the width.
However, they do have the stock size.

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
285/60-20 6.7in 16.7in 33.5in 105.1in 603 0.0%
305/55-20 6.6in 16.6in 33.2in 104.3in 607 -0.8%

285/60 is a Big tire also.
The 285/55/20 is 32.5" tall , 11.5" wide it seems to fit in good with no level needed.
stock275/55/20 31.9" & 10.9"

I just got my BFG's installed yesterday..

Can't really go wrong with any of those. I think it will come down to cost and performance.

The BFG's are popular, but they really need to come down in price to compete with some of the other AT's on the market.

The Cooper at3s look amazing and I know CR Reports rates the Cooper at3 as their #1 tire.

Bigger vs stock? While I agree the 285's and 305's look great, they really killed my mpg, not to mention the added stress on parts and making the brakes less effective.

Hydro that looks amazing!!!

As far as BFG's go they are usually very expensive, but if you can go with a 275/70/18 (33.2") they are cheap from tirerack.com.
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....WLV2&tab=Sizes

$202/tire!

And if memory serves me BFG had a $50 or $80 mail in rebate late last fall.

Those look great! Well, except for the fact that you have them on backwards!

My Nitto's have been great so far...26k miles and less then half worn. Lost about 2 mpg on average compared to the stocker's.

So I just looked at the Cooper Discoverer AT3 and BFG T/A KO. My tire is an LT275/65R20. The BFG's are $1,600, while the Coopers are $1150. I can't see $450 more for OWL tires and no mileage guarantee. Of course, the blackwalls may look better on my black Harley. Those BFG's on Hydro's truck sure look nice, but the Coopers have 55k warranty.

If I wanted to step up in size for a bit of diameter increase, what size could I step to?
