Question 2010 F-150 - Is trailer brake wiring pre-wired?

Bought a 2010 XTR without a tow package. Need to install a brake controller (after market or OEM). Also, need to install a 7 pin connector.

Is the trailer wiring harness all preinstalled? I just do not want to run all the wiring if I really don't need to.

I am sorry if this is a repost.(just direct me to the correct thread if it is).

There are variations from year to year. I had a similar question a couple years ago. My 2011was not pre wired.

My answer to you, dont count on it.

Your going to want to trace the wires to the 4 pin connector to see if they left you the correct wiring.

If you look under the dash under the steering column the TBC plug is taped to the wiring loom.

My 05 was prewired. I bought a controller and tapped 4 wires, IIRC, and all worked.

if you are planning on doing a lot of towing, then spend the time and money to add the integrated Ford controller (if it is avail for 2010 models???)

My old truck had an aftermarket brake controller, my new truck has the Ford controller.

The new one is 1000x better since it adjusted the trailer voltage based on brake pedal input.

I just bought a 2011 Eco and worked it in the deal that the dealer added the in dash brake controller. I thought it was just plug and play but a good friend that wrenches for the dealer said they have to re-program the computer also. Not sure what they do to it, it may have something to do with the anti sway control which came on the truck. may be worth the time to check with the dealer.

yes this is so with any add on of this nature, it all needs to be flashed. when I took my 2010 in it took longer to get a cup of coffee out of the pot than it took for the tech to flash it!

Just thought I would take a couple seconds, and update the results of all of the suggestion.

First TBC plug was taped under the dash to right of the steering column.
Second the whole truck is prewried for towing.
third the OEM controller is over a $100 dollars more expensive than the prodigy 2 I went with.
Lastly the 7 pin wiring even though my XTR has no towing package was a snap. The four pin was plugged into the wiring harness up on a cross member above the spare. That harness has all the wires for the 7 pin harness. Tapped into all those all viola the 7 pin works. One exception is the fused power. If you want that, you have to buy 1 relay for position 9 in the under hood fuse box, and one fuse for position 21. I don't need that extra power supply so I didn't purchase those.

that's awesome I glad it all worked out for you. just hope the intergraded part don't come back to bite you in the rear, like when your towing something big and need the trailer sway control!

Trailer sway control is not in the trailer brake controller... it is in the ABS/ESP/TSC module. I don't know if it would ever be available unless it was there originally (unless you replace the module or get it reprogrammed).

and for the OP - That $100 would be well spent IMHO. I've towed with an aftermarket controller on my old truck. The new truck has the OEM controller and it is awesome in the way it regulates the trailer brakes relative to how hard you push the brake pedal.

Unless the prodigy somehow does that too???
