considering a 2010 lariat

So I'm considering the purchase of a 2010 F150 lariat with the 5.4 with about 50,000 miles on it that a local dealer has. I took it for a test drive today, and noticed a few times that I could really feel it "clunk" into gear. Just seemed like some really hard shifts. After punching in "2010 f150 transmission" into Google, it really has me concerned but they all look like old posts. Are there really issues with the transmissions in the 2010's, or were they blown out of proportion when the trucks first came out?

Any other known issues on these trucks that I should be aware of?

Thanks!

The Problem is not with the transmissions, it is with the shift points controlled by the onboard computer. The transmission itself is a fine 6 speed "Built Ford Tough". I believe there is a TSB on it which allows dealers to re-flash the computer if you complain about the way it is shifting. Personally I always thought mine was fine the way it was.

Mine shifts fine but I do have the dreaded 5.4L Cam Phaser tapping under the hood! No big deal but it's something to watch out for.

OK, so its nothing that indicates a problem with the transmission, or something that's going to cause it to fail?

So the dealer is asking $30,950 for the truck. It is pretty well loaded with the heated and cooled leather seats, sony stereo system, sunroof, backup camera, tailgate step (which I could care less about), chrome package, etc... but it has 50,000 miles on it. Does this sound like a reasonable price for this truck?

I'm trading in an 05 Nissan Titan on it, and they are giving me a fair offer for my trade. Luckily, when I bought the 05 titan, I paid for an extended warranty. This was the most unreliable truck I have ever owned. In 2 years that I owned it, the front diff blew up, both headers cracked and needed replacement, random check engine lights, etc. So, are there any major issues that would make me want to purchase an extended warranty for about $1500 on this truck?

Thanks for the advice!

Where do you live? That sure seems high for a 10 model! Look at the new ones and i bet you can get the price as low as that 10 or pretty close.

I sure wouldn't pay that much for a truck that's almost 4 years old with a 5.4.

Go look at some new 13's with a 5.0.

I have a '10 Lariat SCAB. 27,000 miles on it. No real issues. Be aware the leather seats wear so look this one over. Also, check the A/C out. Stick a digital thermometer in the vent and see how cool it gets. I bet it will be a few degrees higher than your Titan. They cycle AC to improve MPG even when it is in the early stage of cooling on a hot day.
$$ seems high. You can have mine for 27K. Dollar a mile :-)

Thanks for the advice everyone. I think you guys just confirmed what I already knew... 30k is a lot of money for a 4 year old truck with 50k miles on it.

I have been looking at the newer F-150's as well but haven't been able to find the combination of options that I want... I don't like buying new, but may not have a choice.

Thanks!

Buying new is the best way to go - the resale value of late model used trucks is very high right now, and the discounts and incentives on new 13's have never been better. Not only that, I believe you can get a better interest rate on a new loan than a used loan.

10k or more under MSRP on new is quite common right now. The 2013 F-150 build and price site is still up, go see what the MSRP is on a truck equipped the way you want.

I have a 2010 Lariat with 16,000 mi. on it and the private party value is $32,000 in Florida so I don't think that price is too far out of line. The value of mine actually went up this year. It just keeps getting better with age. Maybe the 5.4 liter engine has started paying dividends, ha ha!!

But could you actually get private party value? My 2013 Ecoboost was less than 32k out the door. I know its not a Lariat but still dont see paying so much for leather and a few more goodies on a almost 4 year old truck

I would say yes because the private party value is a few thousand dollars less than the retail value which is what dealers use. They would probably discount it a thousand or two which would put the price pretty close to the private party value. So yes, I would say that is a very realistic figure considering a well optioned 2010 Lariat cost at least $45,000. new. Used Ford trucks have had high resale values for several years now so in certain cases it would probably be more economical to buy new.

If you pay 45 for a Lariat, then you got taken. You should easily be 10k off any sticker on a '13.

I wouldn't even think of touching a used F150 from 09-13, they are stupid high on any lots I have seen.

I was talking about the suggested retail on a 2010 Lariat, not 2013. Three years ago the incentives were a little different as well.
