Question of the Week: 5.0L V8 or 3.5L EcoBoost?

Question of the Week: 5.0L V8 or 3.5L EcoBoost?
After learning that the 2015 Ford F150 5.0L V8 would get a power increase to 385hp and 387lb-ft of torque, we want to know if that extra power and greater payload would lead you to buy the new F150 with the V8 - or would you opt for the 3.5L EcoBoost with less horsepower, a ton more torque and best in class towing?
Make your pick in the poll above and tell us in the thread below why you would go with that engine option if you were buying a 2015 F150.

4x4 5.0L V8: 3060 lb
4x4 3.5L EcoBoost: 3050 lb
Sorry, but 10 extra lbs of payload isn't going to lead me to buy a 5.0

I've been blessed with no less than TWO rattling 5.slows in my neighbourhood. Conversely, all the EB owners I know have had ZERO issues and huge grins on their hairly 'ol Canuckistanian mugs. Plus - the only thing propping up the peaky 4.951 L powerband is the 6-speed. While the EB would still fly with a 2-speed Powerglide behind it,
And remember - the EB is also on that very same 15% diet. So - that is moot. ( Does definitely help the 2.7 EB though, and make IT a true competitor - so much so that it is actually quicker than the 5.slow ).
No thankee.
(PS - if'n a Mod decides to edit my posts, at least try not to destroy the paragraph formatting. I should not have to fix these sorts of things. - Thanks.)

I would go with the 5.0 for now until all the annoying issues are fixed on the 3.5 Ecoboost.
I currently own a 2013 Lariat with the Ecoboost and the only problem I have had so for is the loss of power issue when driving in the rain. I fixed that by drilling a 1/16" hole in the bottom of the CAC near the outlet. My local Ford dealership's shop manager tells me they have had lots of issues with the Ecoboost. Once the Ecoboost is refined and these issues are resolved, it will be tough to beat.

Plow package is of little benefit to me because its for light personal use plowing only and their best selling engines are left out and personally I wouldn't put a plow on a truck that was my daily driver. Up north we also use snowblowers.
Fuel economy is unknown. But the other forum has the Ford contracted drivers getting 29 mpg at 65 mph on the hwy with the 4x4 2.7L, and 23 mpg with the 4x4 3.5 EB and 3.73s. I don't know of any 5.0s that have ever done that well so that's hardly a wash. We'll see if the 5.0 gets better mpg than the 2.7/3.5 EB, but I highly doubt it.
5.0 better mpg towing? Never been proven in a test. 5.0 and 3.5L EB never went head to head and the 5.0 has never went head to head against any other Ford engine. So that claim of better mpg is hearsay and a bunch of guys talking apples and oranges.
If we go by the EPA ratings of the current truck, the rating is 1 mpg better on the 3.5L EB. That's still 5%.
So I would vote for the 2.7L EB.
Next, between the 3.5 EB and the 5.0, 3.5 EB gets my vote. Better mpg, uses less oil, 90% of peak torque available early, and the payload is within 10-30 lbs of the max for only $400 more.

The other engine and the 2.7L EcoBoost isn't going to get many votes if you represent it like that and the voting will be swayed by current 5.0 owners.
2.7L EcoBoost isn't just a smaller engine:
- 2nd gen EcoBoost design
- durability, CGI block, same material that makes the 6.7L diesel in the Super Duty
- best possible fuel economy
- good payload and towing (up to 8500 lb)
- faster than the 5.0
- meets the needs of 90% F-150 customers
- Ford testing shows the 2.7 EcoBoost also outperforming Ram 3.0 EcoDiesel and Chevy Silverado 5.3 V8 while towing a 7,000 lb trailer up Davis Dam

From the other forum...
Talked to the guy who has been driving a SC 4x4 with the 2.7 EB for a couple of weeks, he said on the freeway at 65 he's been getting 29mpg

Both are great engines, but I would lean toward the 3.5L EcoBoost because of the gains to power & mpg by just messing around with a tune. The 5.0L would need a bit more than just a handheld programmer... but it would sound a million times better than the EB when finished (personal opinion)
