2005 F-150 Tuneup

Looks like I should have checked in here before I changed the plugs!! I used autolite instead motorcraft . Didn't use any dielectric grease Now I have a intermittent miss. Could it be just the fact that I used no dielectric grease? 110000 miles. Any thoughts?

yes, it certainly could be or it could be the Autolites breaking down. I would clean the MAF and I would put dielectric grease in the boots and around all the rubber seems. If that does not help, then I would suspect the plugs. Did you break any of the originals removing them?

I was assuming the 5.4, you may have the 4.6

Ok, if you've never cleaned the MAF, I'm sure it needs it. It's easy and won't be a waste of time.

On the 5.4, it's on the side of the air box on top of the throttle body. Two torx screws hold it in place. You unplug it, remove it and spray it with electrical cleaning spray. Do not touch the little wire, that is brittle. It is what measures the air going into the engine so fuel can be regulated to match. Takes maybe 10 minutes. I clean mine about every 20,000, which is over kill, I'm sure.

I would assume it is on the intake before it mounts on the TB. Hopefully, someone with a 4.6 will chime in. If they don't pretty soon, I would suggest another thread with that specific question. Be sure to mention the year and the 4.6 engine.

Norm, do you know exactly where it is on the 4.6?

AUTOLIGHTS ARE KNOWN FOR CAUSING AN INTERMITTENT MISS change 'em out asap

what did you gap them to???????

the MAF is inside the box that surrounds the air filter

open it up like your going to change the air filter and look inside the intake tract towards the throttle body and you'll see it just spray some MAF cleaner on it no reason to disassemble it further

MAF Sensor

Regarding Bluejay's post about helping with the MAF sensor, I currently have a CAI(Cold Air Intake) hooked up to my OEM MAF housing.

That is how your MAF housing will appear, obviously not exact because Im not using the OEM Intake, but look for that little housing with the wire coming out like that, and of course you will have to take apart your intake to reach the little wire inside. Just get some MAF Sensor cleaner and spray the crap out of it and let dry before reassembling. Hope this helps somewhat(I have a 4.6L).

Also! If you're a new DIY'er then you cant go wrong buying a Haynes Manual or Chiltons, whichever tickles your fancy. It helps tons and explains how to do nearly EVERYTHING you'd ever like too in very nice detail.

I gapped them at .54...I never had a problem with autolites before. Old Ford tractors love the autolite 237. I just got some dielectric grease. Going to try that first.

These old Ford tractor's likes autolites. 4 plugs and easy to change
