Red face Engine Toasted...so I thought (another fuel injector thread)

Add me to the list of fuel injector failures for the 05 5.4L.....truck has been running great since I had the COPS changed after I noticed a rough idle. On the way home from work tonight truck was running fine for 15+ MILES and then pulled up to a stop sign, stopped and went to get back on the gas and noticed a loss of power....thought it was weird. No CEL etc so continued for about 100 ft and noticed a real hesitation. Pull over and truck started skipping and missing. Got a check engine light flash and figured one of my COPS had failed. Was only about 1/4 mile from home so figured I would limp it home and get it towed from my place tomorrow.

Turned the engine off and cranked it back over and made it 1/8 of a mile before SEVERE rough idling and the strong odor of gas. Pop's from the exhaust pipe and my edge evo started going bonkers. Pulled in the driveway and shut it down (already know the engine is royally F'd at this point) and then read the DTC's.

P0175- Too Rich Bank 2
P0300- Missfire unknown
P0305- Cyl 5 Misfire
P0306- Cyl 6 Misfire
P0307- Cyl 7 Misfire
P0308- Cyl 8 Misfire
P0316

Given the number of misfires, strong fuel smell, bucking at idle and lack of power I can guarantee one of the injectors decided to open up and dump fuel thus blowing all my plugs/COPS and causing the misfire's. With the amount of fuel it went thru the Cats are probably toasted as well.

Will have it towed to Ford in the morning and hopefully it's not in for too long and no teeth are needed to be pulled to get it fixed.

Sad thing is I just had Ford check the injectors less than a week ago for any issues when they replaced the COPS.....

Financially this is the last thing I need so hopefully it goes smoothly. Does anyone know if Ford gives you a rental car while your truck is in the shop for the fuel injector recall? I plan on bitching and moaning if they don't with the amount of money I spent at the dealership.

The dealership where I bought mine gave me a rental but I have all of my and the wife's routine maintenance done there and have a really good relationship with them.

Yeah, take the Edge off. Knowing these dealerships, they will put all the blame on that and screw you over big time.

its already off and flashed to stock...they just worked on it about a week ago and checked the injectors and said everything was fine.

I pulled the battery on my 96 mustang that I haven't used in about 6 months and was going to sell it...hopefully the battery is charged and it starts tomorrow if they don't provide a rental.

I have all my regular maintenance etc done at the dealer and girlfriend bought her car there after I brought her in. Hopefully they will provide for me now.

Just got off the phone with the dealer. They looked up the TSB since I can't find my letter. I'm covered and they also said Ford covers for a rental car if the vehicle has to stay overnight due to the extended warranty on the injectors.

They will crack into it later today after it gets towed in about 2 hours and let me know which injector went t*ts up.

I also requested that they change all the O2 sensor, Cats, plugs and COPS for any bad ones they find (i'm sure the 02/cats are gone and half the plugs/Cops are as well with the amount of fuel it dumped)

Wish me luck I'm hoping my rental might be an 09-10 F150

I'm getting close to being out of the extended warranty. I have over 116,000 on mine. I know how my luck runs.

I thought that the extended injector warranty was just for 100k?

I think the ford letter said 11 years/120,000. I'll see if I can find it.

11 yr/120K on the injectors.

Just got a call from my service guy and #7 was stuck open. Seems like that injector is always the one that fails. They replaced the injector and checked everything and it checked fine.

They said they only replaced the injector. I asked about the COPS/Plug on that cylinder and they said it checked fine as did the 02 sensors. Should I be looking for pre-mature failure on that plug and COP now since the injector dumped fuel into the cylinder?

Thanks Guys and looks like I avoided the huge repair.

I would worry about a catalytic converter more than the plug. Mine went about 2 weeks after hydrolock. I tried to tell them that when they first took it in and they looked at me like I was from another planet.

Guess they wanted to wait until it threw a code and the truck started running like crap again.
