No cmputer readings

I have a 1997 F-150 4.2ltr. Last week it just stopped running, I changed the coil and it ran for about a week and just died. I changed the coil again and it did not help, also changed the fuel relay which did not help. A mechanic hooked up to the computer and it's not reading anything, the hand held computer says link error. Any suggestions on whats wrong.
Thanks

I know the newer models share the same circuit, but I did not know if the 97 would.
