Well my statement on the rotary is based on 'sperence with the demon invested, high amp drawing, disaster in approx. a 5 lb package with RPM’S beyond your wildest dreams tool.
It is the tool I used that destroyed my paint job on a car I had way back. But, that bad boy can turn some serious RPM’S yeeeeehaaaaa…

The Rotary / direct drive, has no clutch action. Similar to a angle grinder. It will continue to spin ( or try to ) no matter how much you lean on it. Before you can get it to stop by pressing down on it, it has already damaged the paint.
If you look at the Random Orbit Buffer thread, you'll see the P/N to the PC and DeWalt ones.
Just remember, care in pads is key no matter which way you go. Grit in a pad can damage a paint job if you are going by hand or by a DA buffer. It is not 100% fool proof, but neither is doing it by hand. Carry over your care for you hand application pads to a DA, and you'll be set.
If you are still unsure, get one, and wash the inside of the truck bed and test it there. Wait until you see the bed of the truck with a polish / wax job on it, there is another 45 min gone every time you polish / wax

In case any of you are interested, Meguiar's has a nice video, and/or slide show that explains how to use the "orbital buffer", and also explains how safe it is to use.
Here's the link (Take one of the Power Polishing links on this page): http://www.meguiars.com/clinics/clinics_template.cfm
BTW, I think the guy in the show is really RP, and not Barry Meguiar!
