Rust Protection on scratches from accessories.

I just got my new truck Saturday. I put mud flaps on yesterday. When putting them on, the clips scratch the paint on the wheel well flange. I’m not concerned about looks (you cant see it of course), but what about it rusting out in the future. Any suggestions?

First and foremost, welcome to f150online.com!! We're very glad to have you aboard...

About your flaps...

Don't the clips you're referring to clip to the fender flare? If so, I'm 99% sure that that part is plastic and not metal and thus, you wouldn't have to worry about rust.

If it's not what I'm thinking about, maybe some silicone (since it's in a non-visible place) would prevent corrosion.

Best of luck to you and let us know how you handle it.

I was told (by the Ford Body shop manager) that Silicone actually attracts water.

If the scratch is hidden, I would dry it and put some touch up paint on it and fugeddaboutit.

my 2 cents.

I removed my mud guards and noticed that the rubbing of the plastic against the paint over 2 years has worn it down to bare metal. Just a tiny line where the edge of the guards touched the body so no rust. The replacement guards were the exact same ones so you can't see anything .
