Maintenance help for a 42k mile 4.2L

Hello, my first post as I just converted from a chevy man to a Ford man with my recent purchase of a 98 Regular Cab 5 speed manual with a 4.2L (and I must say, I am very pleased and impressed with the Ford). My question, simple yet difficult, is what basic (routine or otherwise) maintenance should be performed at 42k miles to this vehicle? I appreciate any of you guys/gals responses.

Looking to learn alot here...Adam

The first thing you'll want to do, just in case, is look at the sticker on the driver side valve cover to make sure the engine were built after 1/15/1998. 4.2L engines built prior to this can have a few gaskets issues.

Other than the above, 42k is not a lot of miles and engines built after 1/15/1998 do not have any inherent problems. Considering that you did just purchase it though, there are a few things to address, just to make sure everything is in order.

-Change Coolant
-Change Air Filter
-Change Engine Oil
-Replace Brake Fluid
-Replace Manual Transmission Fluid
-Replace fuel filter

Even though Ford does not recommend it till 105,000 miles, the spark plugs and wires are usually worn by 50,000 and should be replaced. You shouldn't have anything beyond routine maintenance till at least 80,000 miles.

If you need any help with a particular procedure, just post a question. These trucks are very easy to work on.

Thanks AjRagno

The date on the valve cover is June 3, 1998. So, it seems I am in the clear. Thanks for the advice, and I will do all the maintenance you suggested.

Thanks again...Adam

Anymore more suggestions are welcomed.
