I'm so Ashamed ...

My mom once told me “Tom, ever since the doctor dropped you (on your head) when you were born, you’ve been a little different.” Well, I did it again. I’ve been waiting for nicer weather to replace the rear shocks on my truck. Ok, it’s not just so it’s warmer, it’s so the new shocks don’t rust and look bad. There, I got that off my chest. But it gets worse.

Last month I ordered a brandy new set of Rancho RS5000 shocks for the rear to replace the original “fake” Rancho’s that come with the FX4 package. (Might as well be called the “rides like a floor jack package.”) After they came… Oh, I just don’t know if I can say this. Ok, I painted them – with 4 coats of white Rustolem plus a couple of coats of clear. There, I got it out. But there’s more. I then carefully placed the Rancho decals on them so they would both face perfectly back. I even cleaned off the dirty hand prints after I installed them. Then I did the full Zaino thing. Oh my!

I’m so ashamed! Is there any hope for me? Can you forgive me?

Yes Boss, I did Zaino the shocks. 3 coats, with ZFX. How can I tell my mom? I suppose the saving grace (if there is one) is that I didn't Zaino the front shocks because they don't show. Do you think I should seek counseling? Could it be the Zaino fumes? Nah, I didn't inhale.

Ok now I see an issue a terrible problem…

How could you NOT Zaino the front shocks? DO you not ever get under the truck to change the oil? To clean the undercarriage, drive shaft, U-joints etc? When you do your “normal” undercarriage cleaning you are going to squirm every time you look at the front shocks and think ”My GOD, why did I not Zaino those?”

I had a guy that used to come to my shop that would paint replacement parts for his caddy to match the body color. Metallic blue shocks, valve covers radiator gaurd, etc. He too gave the painted parts several coats of wax before installation.

I guess it's pretty common.

01 XLT Sport,

If I polish my U-Joint to often, won't I go blind?

Aren't you still waiting for the first coat(s) of Zaino on the new L? What are you practicing on, the lawn mower? Wait a minute, don't answer that.
