How can I Tighten the Steering on a Bronco?
#2
First of all, check all the front-end parts for wear and excessive "play" .... tie-rod ends, idler arm, pittman arm, etc.
If all that checks out, I know Ford used to use a rubberized "steering coupler" on the shaft from the steering wheel to the steering gear box. These are notorious for "stretching" and causing play in the steering wheel. Not sure if you will find that on a '93 or not, though.
Finally, if all this does not render a solution, there is an adjustment on the steering gear box itself. You can adjust the "backlash" of the steering gear. Be very careful if you go this route. If you tighten this too much, it can cause the steering gear box to "bind" and cause a very unsafe steering condition.
