Working on painting a tailgate handle red to match my truck. Was looking good til I put on the third coat of clearcoat (Duplicolor)...instead of being glossy like the second coat, it was dull and "foggy." Any idea what is happening here? First two coats were applied pretty lightly, but was shiny.

I did apply the third coat when it was fairly humid.

Any advice is appreciated.

if i had to guess it would be the humidty effecting the finish either that or you put it on to soon or to heavy. not sure if you can wet sand it off and then buff it back up. i'm sure someone else here with body/paint knowledge should be able to help you better. good luck.

 

I think sg might be right as I've experienced what you're seeing as well...

My particular problem appeared to be a combo of humidity and lack of drying time.

You can wet sand it. Believe me, I was taught a great lesson in humility when I painted mine. I'm very happy with the final result. I just don't elaborate on how long it took...

 

Yeah, wet-sanding is my next step to bring back the gloss.
