Plastic Coating

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I have alum rail covers on my truck and the plastic coating the manufacturer put on is starting to fog and come off. I would like to take it off and polish them. Any one know what would take this stuff off?

Without seeing it, it sounds like the coating is failing. I'm not sure that there's any way to correct it.

is the plastic coating meant to be permanent? Or is it a protective coating for shipping and handling, intended to be removed once installed?

Thanks

Thanks for the replys. I agree that the coating is failing. I looks like some sort of clear coat. Fairly thick. The covers have been on the truck for about 5 or 6 yrs. And I did not realy maintain them. I was wondering if anyone knew what would take it off. So I could take it off and polish them.

You mean actually remove the failing clear coating material?

Hmm... not sure what to tell you on that one.

There is a clearcoat removal product available as well as a complete recoating kit that will last a long time available from POR15, just look under wheel restoration kit.

I certainly don't claim to know it all... I do, however, have a good resource on finding out about this type of stuff... you see, I do environmental work for a Tier I automotive supplier to GM... they make a bunch of different molded plastic parts/pieces for them and I believe that my contact there would be able to tell me just about everything about plastic injection molding...

He's talked to me before about this stuff and he REALLY knows the business... I'll try to give him a call soon and see if I can pick his brain. I had a question about their hazardous waste generator status anyway that I need to get resolved...
