Washing engine

All,

I've been washing my vehicle's engines for 3 decades. I usually cover the alternator with foil or plastic to keep the water out, and have never had any problems. I use the foaming engine cleaner.

Anyone had any problems washing their F-150's engine? Is there anything else I need to cover up?

Thanks.

I washed my engine once and I didn't cover anything and I didn't have any problems. I was just very careful.

I wouldn't spray the exhaust manifolds if they're hot

i only clean under the hood by hand ever since i got a coil wet on my 00 f150, but you should cover the computer, alternator and either cover or advoid the coils/plugs also the air fliter if you have an aftermarket intake

OOPS, haha. I've used a pressure washer on the last two rangers I had (96 & 02) and now on my F150. Also pressure washed all the rest of the familys vehicles and the girlfriends cars engine. Never had any trouble at all, just be sure to let it cool down first so you dont crack or warp something.

It's about a 50/50 split opinion-wise as to whether or not to do it.

The owner's manual has directions on what to cover and actually recommends washing the engine. I have done it several times but have been very careful. The Engines forum is filled with posts that begin with "I washed my engine and now..."

Be careful, cover up the stuff that is suppose to be covered, and take your time.

Oh, yeah, definitely

let it be completely cooled first! Don't want a cracked block... that would be a bummer.

I learned that decades ago watching my father rinse off a Sears lawn mower with the hose right after I got done cutting... all of a sudden black oil started running out of the block!
