They key maintaining a safe distance from the nozzle to the target (ie paint, wheels etc). You will notice the pressure drops off significantly and exponentially as you move away from the tip. I have a Honda 2400psi pressure washer than can cut right into skin (made a mistake and found out the hard way- oops!), but if you move it away just a foot or so it is safe to wash your hands.
So, carefully test YOUR pressure washer/tip setup to see what the safe distance is. Generally, except for real chrome or metal finishes, stay at least 10 inches away from the item being washed and you will be fine.

Obviously like anything else you get what you pay for on these things right? I really only need it to wash my truck and i am just wondering how good of one i need to get...got a lift, tire and wheel combo comin up so i just dont know if i need to buy an 800 washer...ebay had some any opinions on karcher?
