How do I remove brake dust stains?

I went several weeks this past summer without washing my truch and when I finally washed it the baked on brake dust has left permanent dark stains. I have tried several wheel cleaner products and they will not touch it. Someone recommended using steel wool but how bad will it affect the wheels?

They are FX4 aluminum wheels.

Any solutions?

A few things I'd suggest that won't be dangerous for the clearcoat paint on the wheels. Just a few thoughts before diving into stuff like acid.

Have you claybared them
Simple Green allowed to soak for a little while on a cold wheel. (cold is important)
Maybe try a cleaner wax.

I have'nt tried either of those things. I have tried several products from the auto parts stores with no success.

over the counter wheel cleaner will not work if its set in....would you take steel wool to the hood of your truck??? then dont do it on your wheels, they are clear coated like the rest of the paint...use a professional acid based wheel cleaner as directed, no problems at all. everyone runs scared from it, but nobody has ever used it them self.

Agreed, I'd give that a shot.
