New trick to cleaning wheels and tires
I came inside today looking for my wheel cleaner, and couldnt find it. but found a bottle of Comet. It worked really well on the sidewalls and rims. but be careful on chrome because it will etc chrome or any other delicate surfaces.
I threw a quick coat of polish on them to brighten them back up.
My rims and tires about a two weeks ago

Be careful with it on ANYTHING on your vehicle... It'd be *way* down my list of choices when thinking about what I could've used - even in a pinch - to accomplish the same task. Mind you, Comet powder is about 80% limestone... yes, limestone. Calcium Carbonate.
To those thinking about trying this one... try a few other routes (read: nearly every other route) first.
Glad it worked out for you but, it's not good advice.

Still waiting for him to bring the truck up to me for some TLC and yes NO COMET will be used. Payment will be one custom 100X hat.

My tire detailing tricks:
I use a bottle of 50/50 simple green on the inside and outside areas of tires, spray it on, and scrub as much as I can with a soft brush and rinse it thoroughly. That gets most of the brake dust and road "brown" off.
For white letters, I use SOS pads followed by a good rinse.
As for wheels, I'd never dare use Comet. It is very abrasive and at least in my case with the aluminum factory wheels with shiny machined surfaces I use regular car wash and a clean sponge or wash mit.

It is good for tires. Just very high caution is required. I asked my grandfather what they used to do during the hot rodding days. He laughed and told me how thy'd drive them down into the shallow river bed near town and scrub them with sand and water right out of the river. Said it was the only thing to get those wide white walls good and white. direct quote. "nothing would pick up a pretty girl like a good clean car"
