As far as just vacs go for your vehicle spending 200 wont be necessary in my opinion.. I bought a Ridgid 6.5 HP shop vac for 99 and it is a beast...you could get by on 4 horses i think for vehicles but i do light extraction. Also look into the Metro Vac n Blow...they have a ton of accessories and i think it checks out at 150

I use a Craftman 16 gallon Vac, it works great for me... I think I got it for $69 couple of years back.

Key is the accessories... The ones I find myself using most are a simple brush head for the seats and carpet...

... and a rotating beater head for large flat areas (Bedrug, fold down seats)

Occasionally a crevice tool to get under/between the seats. Keep your filter clean/replaced and it should last you many years.

I bought this one and really like it. It's small and portable to take every where plus it's powerful !!

I'm kind of pissed because I paid $100 plus for it when I bought it ...

We have a Eureka Boss SmartVac we use in the house, and it does work great. For the garage and vehicles I use a Ridgid 6 Gallon Wet/Dry Vac.

Got it at Home Depot.

I picked this one up last summer. I've been very pleased with it. small container so It's light and portable. Larger motor and a smaller tube so the suction power is great. wonderfull for light extraction and a low price for what you get IMHO.

One drawback......It only vacuumes, there is no exhaust setting.

Linky!

Prior to this one I had a Rigid. It may have just been a fluke but, it never worked very well. My craftsmen is so so much better than my old Rigid. (disclaimer.. Mine is the only one I've seen. Can't speak about other Rigids)

I had a Metropolitan Vac n' Blo and I really liked it. I had the wall mounted version with a 20' hose. I loved the attatchments like stud said (especially the angled crevis attatchments). You can get the portable model from an online vendor for $179, but unless you do a lot of detailing I would recommend a Shop-Vac like Thumper's. The portable vacs are very handy. My dad found a Ridgid for under $100 and I really like it too.

I like my Craftsman Shop Vac, it's the tall skinny modle that hangs on a wall when not in use. Coat about $70.

Add me to the list of Rigid owners.

I think mine is a 4hp, and medium sized tank (can't remember the gallons, and am not at home to check it). It has worked flawlessly for 5 years now.

I have a Rigid that I bought at home depot. Its really not about how many horse power it rated at but how much your filter will flow and how well a job it does. I have found that the HEPA filters plug up really fast as they filter more than just the regular filter. If you are doing most of your work outside you can get away with a regular filter. But if you are working in a garage and you dont want all kinds of crap on your car use the HEPA filters.
