How do I fix this?

I'm thinking about ordering some Black Wow but not sure yet? With all this Hyperdressing talk, I don't know what to do. Can it be brought back? Would I be better off painting them than trying to bring back the black?

There is a dye that you can use to bring it back. I forget what it's called and it's supposed to last pretty long. Months instead of days like tire dressings. My opinion is to buy a new set, I don't think they cost too much, or paint them with Krylon Fusion paint. It's made for plastic and it sprays nice and is pretty durable.

There are a couple of ways you can attack this one:

1. Pull them off and paint them. Krylon Fusion (dont forget to add clear over it...)
2. BONDO Restore Black (gel-type dye). I liked it a LOT.
3. Black WOW. I hear GREAT things about it and when I wash my truck next I will be applying it (Thanks again, JP) for my own test run.
4. Tire/trim shine. As mentioned before, it will look great for a few days, not months.

I have used all but Black wow (on the above list, that is), and I find them all to have their places. One trick you may want to try is to use a pencil eraser and try to get some of the white off beforehand...It works wonders.

I'm going to paint them. I picked up a couple cans of the Black Satin.

Which clear do you recommend? I'm thinking the UV shielding matte clear. I think the gloss will look to shiny.

Opinions?

I think you hit it spot on.

I have painted and not cleared before, and it looked like crap after a week (rock chips, etc)...take your time, do it right. And take pics!!!

I believe it was Ticman who used Showroom New Restorer on the black plastic on his rear bumper and it worked beautifully. I think that's what Thump is thinking of. I think I'd try that before pulling them off to paint them.

That works good but what I was thinking of was the Bondo Restore Black that f150sport03 mentioned. It last longer than anything I've ever heard of ..

I would suggest the same. The Showroom New Restorer is a dye and works very well. Do thin even coats it might take a 2-3 coats. 1 bottle will last forever.

Here is a before and after with only one coat. This is also without Hyperdressing. I ended up using 3 coats and looks great. Can still see texture differences but is night and day difference. The before pictures do not do this justice. It was in really bad shape.

Before

After 1 coat and no dressing

I used Bumper Restore by BONDO on mine today, took them off, cleaned them, sprayed them with the product, let them dry and back on...good as new. The BONDO product said it had some sort of flex product, I guess similar to that in our front (painted) bumpers. I guess we will see in a few weeks after washing... My .02

I have a stepside 99 and i used eagle one wet with a tire swipe and its still black as ever after a week of rain. though when the weather heats up i will be using Duplicolor truck bed coating on my side steps and all other black plastic and the nerf bars. heres what it looked like after the eagle one, and a pic of the bed coating on my valance. My plastic looked as bad as yours before i did it i know it wont last but wow, even after a week of rain its still the same.
