Trim?

02 Supercrew Fx4

My color scheme is called "True Blue with Metallic Clear" and has the darker gray rocker/fenders with the bright red pinstripe along the gray. I bought this truck this past summer and believe the color scheme is OEM.

Anyway, I notice my bed rails and rear window casing are plastic and appear to be of "gray" coloring rather than black. The large side window casings appear to be metal and also grayish rather than black, yet, i think because they are metal the dark gray doesn't match the gray of the plastic gray parts mentioned.

All in all, it has been bugging me. Looks inconsistant and busy. I invision them all black, like the black plastic side mirror casings. It's like i have 3 different shades of trim: mirror casing looks pretty black, metal gray and plastic gray.

When i treat the plastic gray with a conditioner, it darkens it slightly but still not dark enough. I haven't put anything on the side window metal casings.

I suspect my only option to get them closer to matching is to Krylon Fusion paint the plastic parts black, paint the metal side window trim with a metal black paint.

Anybody else had this bug and what was your solution?

Thanks!

Some pictures might help.

What have you tried on them so far?

Best that I've found personally is Meg's #40 and Meg's Hyperdressing.

Many say that Black WoW is second to none. I haven't gotten to try it out yet though.

I've tried a bit of armor all.
I guess what i am wondering is, was the plastic always dark gray straight from the factory or has it just faded very evenly?

If it's dark gray from factory, then nothing i use is going to change the color accept paint.

Can't honestly answer that one. I've never seen a factory dark gray other than the silver that came on the F250 platinum edition but I can't say for absolute certain.

I know my front valence under the chrome bumper is dark gray. Perhaps the rear window casing, side window lower casing and the bed rails were made the same dark gray color, for contrast purposes or something.
All i know is my side view mirror casings are black plastic and it all seems awkward not matching.

Ohh, it is. But I prefer the former just a slight edge since the ease of putting it on. There is a reason Rick is on my speed dial though.

Back to Black won't do squat. It will look okay for about a week. The stuff we are talking about is a dye, not a cream.

1997 - 2003 plastic trimming is dark grey, so it never really will turn black.

I've been using Black Wow for awhile, it looks pretty good afterwards, but, it doesn't last long enough for me, and it attracts dust like a Magnet. When spring time comes around, I will be painting all my plastics flat/satin black.

And Back to Black is s**t.

Ahh, thanks Darren, that's what i was thinking. Looks like I'll be painting too.
It's odd that they made the side mirror casings and mounting casing black!

Yeah, all of the trim on my truck is nearly black except for the bed rail caps, tailgate cap, and running boards, which is all dark grey.

The only thing Back to Black is good for is getting wax residue off the plastic.
