Talking Clay Bar Before Wax

I do alot of work for the dealerships in LA.
And we use Clay Magic (blue) on all of the "Fallout" removal jobs out here. I don't know of any TSBS out on useing a clay bar on Ford Paint. In fact if your truck is still under the 12/12 Warr. Ford will do it for free! (with a little complaing of corse)

I've finished a little research on the National Highway Transportation Safety Assoc web-site: http://www.nhtsa.gov/

and it didn't mention anything either. I know this site isn't perfect, but it has some merit.

No I don't think there is much to worry about! I use the clay bar on the most exotic cars and there has NEVER been a problem.
The information I have read on this board is usually pretty darn accurate though.

Cool

I have been all over the Oasis database for paint and body related tsb's and ssm's, and haven't come across anything on clay bar. I have seen it for rapguard and fallout from the railyards. So, clay away.

My bride's new Taurus had some rail dust, or something, on the roof. I took it back to the Ford house and watched their make ready guy clay bar the whole car!

Question

I hate to sound like a complete idiot, but what IS a clay bar, and how is it used. I wax my cars and truck twice a year, but have just heard if this clay bar. I'll assume that its just that. A clay bar that you rub on before waxing??. Seriously guys, let me in on this one. Thanks...

Karick11: It's a bar of claylike material(may even be clay for all i know) used to strip ground in contaminants from the surface of your paint. It's used to prep your vehicle for waxing. You wash the vehicle with Dawn detergent to remove wax and loose particles, then you clay(using Detailer or concentrated car wash as a lubricant), wash again, wipe it down and then wax. The clay gets the surface as smooth as glass. If you drop the clay while doing it THROW it away and get more as it picks up sand and becomes a bar of sandpaper on your paint. Go here and read the "Application" section for more info:

I have never used the ZainoBros Clay Bar before, however I am certain that it works in the same fashion as all of the others. I would not reccomend EVER washing your truck with ANY dishwashing soap, it is possibly the worst thing that can be done. I would suggest using any "car wash" soap sold at your local auto parts store. The dishwashing soap can cause a streaking in the clearcoat that you may not notice right away but it will come out sooner or later. I use a lubricant specialy made for clay bar appications, it should come with most clay bars, like the Clay Magic bar. Remember like 4D Thunder stated if you drop it THROW IT AWAY! Any questions I would be happy to answer.

Thanks guys. I'm going to give the clay bar a shot after summer weather hits. Up here in Rochester NY there is soo much garbage on the roads and in the air that it raises hell with the finish. I've seen sone pretty wild finishes on some of the posted pictures of peoples trucks here. Cableguys truck stands out in my mind. The thing looks like its on fire!!. Again, thanks, I'll post results and thoughts. C-ya.
