Lightbulb Want to brighten up fading plastic?

I was installing the roll in bed liner in my truck a while back and while rolling it on the front of the bed I sliped and rolled it right onto the plastic trim aroune the window. I thought that I had some acetone which you are supposed to have during installation but the bottle was empty somehow. So the next best thing....Gasoline.

I wiped it off with gasoline and the spot where I did it looks brand new. The plastic on my step bumper and on the bed rails is started to turn a little grey/white even though I use protectant. So basically I am thinking that to restore plastic: whipe it with gasoline or a harsh cleaning chemical like acetone and follow it up with some protectant. I am gonna try this on some non visible spots and I will let you know how it goes.
