You may want to try waterless engine wash. It would be more safer compared to regular engine wash.

I am searching around about this but am not sure if my engine applies. I have a 1999 F150 4.6L. I do not have the coils that are attached above the plug though. Would I still have the sensitivity issues? Thanks, it looks like this topic has been exhausted but I havent found my question answered yet.

I think the 4.6 (97 & 98) that have the cyl bank coils are safer than the later models with individual COPs. That being said, the plugs wells are still susceptible to filling up with water and causing a misfire. I just always used a very light mist and shield them with a length of tin foil.

dont detail your engine, useless, unless your talking plastic trim. Your gonna do more damage then good.
