WTF ate a hole in my paint in 1 day???

So I go out to wash my F-150 and find this half-dollar size HOLE in my paint near the center of my hood. It appears to have been eaten away by a granular type product. Its like sea salt, but bigger chunks, and is slippery to the touch. Its also bonded on there really well. It doesn't come off easy like a salt would, and only after quite a bit of scrubbing with my finger did I get that much of this **** off. I'm not a chemistry major, but I don't think it's an acid, and don't suspect vandalism since it's 1 patch in the center of the hood with no other drips or damage, although I'm not ruling it out since I drive it daily. I don't know if I parked under something or what. I'm pretty pissed though. I take really good care of my truck and it ate down to the bare metal in a day or less. Anyone seen anything like this?

If I recall back a few decades to HS, slippery to the touch is a base.

That said, the only 2 things I can think of that would do something like that, in that short amount of time, are lye and brake fluid.

If you touched your hand to lye, it would have been on fire immediately eating at your skin.

That leaves brake fluid, maybe from an over pass or parking deck ?
- Sure there are other things, but those are the 2 that come to mind straight away.

Does not really matter what it was, time to have the hood repainted.

Wow... that's unfortunate. Are you able to locate any other spots on the vehicle? If so, maybe you can make a case with your insurance folks.... it'll be a long shot though.

Bird poo won't do that... the only other thing I could potentially fathom is a defect - albeit, unlikely. If there was any kind of silicone contamination pre-paint, it'd cause an adhering problem to the metal - even if previously basecoated. This though, to me, doesn't appear to be that type of an issue... Looks to me like chem damage of some sort...

Sorry man...

How long has it been since you last washed it? where do you park it daily? how much sun has it seen? Obviously looks like a hazardous chemical, however, tree sap baked on by sun for long enough can etch through.

That definitely looks like something very caustic ate through the paint. I think I'm going to SSCULLY and guess it's some sort of diluted lye product.
