What Chip

I have a 02 F-150 Supercrew, 4.6 2wd. I tow a 20ft Bassboat with it. I have a K&N filter and catback flowmaster exaust. Would a performance chip help me for power and torque. If so which one and how much does it usaually run? Thanks

Hi TC,

Welcome to F-150 Online!

In terms of what will actually get you the best results, hands down that's the Superchips tuning, as nobody else has as much R&D into this Ford F-series platform. Superchips is the original chipmaker, having basically created this industry a couple of decades ago.

You have a number of options there - Briefly, there's the single program Superchip module, the 2-program Superchip Flip Chip, and then the 1715 Micro Tuner - of those 3, the best option is the Micro Tuner, as with that you get 3 different performance tunes (87 octane tow-safe, premium gas tow-safe, and then a "MAX" performance tune for premium gas that is not designed for towing), so you have a program for every type of use and octane level.

Now for those who want the absolute *maximum* horsepower, torque and performance gains, there's also our 4-bank style products, in which we can do in-depth custom tunes (even on bone-stock trucks). They are available in a single program chip, a 4-program chip, and then a 3-program Micro Tuner device, and the latter is what most people are doing right now.

With "chips," you remove the PCM from the vehicle, pop the covers off, clean the connector, install the chip and then reinstall the PCM back into the vehicle - about a 30-45 minute job for first-time installers. With the Micro Tuners, it's very simple and only takes 10 minutes, as it's a "plug-n-play" type of device that you just plug into the vehicle's OBD-II port under the dash, and flash the PCM in just a few minutes.

Personally, I prefer the Micro Tuners to flash the PCM, as that way not only do you have an easier installation (though the chips aren't "hard" to install by any means, they just take longer), and the really neat thing is that you can still do full diagnostics & even datalogging if need be without removing the tuning - whereas with *any* kind of chip installed, you're very limited & basically need to remove it to do diagnostics. This is due to the design of the Ford PCM, not due to any lack of proper design in the aftermarket chips.

Specific pricing cannot be discussed here on the message boards, that is against the rules of F-150 Online. What I would suggest is to give us a call at our number listed below, as not only will you get your best pricing (on our web site we're bound by the manufacturer's MAP pricing guidelines), but we can also go over in proper detail just exactly what your various options are, the exact pricing, the results of each, etc. - as well as how you use your vehicle, your location (which affects fuel quality, which affects the results from tuning), and any other modifications you have now and/or may be contemplating for the future.

In terms of the basic order of "bang for the buck," having a *properly* optimized powertrain program is the single best performance enhancement you can make - it won't turn a 2-3 ton truck into a rocketship of course, it's just the single best bang for the buck, as nothing else for the same or less cost will get you as much of an improvement in performance.

Feel free to drop by our web site at www.TroyerPerformance.com and take a look at all of these products, as well as all the many other things we do for these trucks - and even at that, on our site thee is only about 10% of what we do - we basically do everything from air filters to superchargers and everything else in between - if it improves performance in these vehicles, we do it.

And of course, please don't hesitate to call us if you'd like to cover the tuning options (or anything else) in proper detail, get the best pricing, etc., so you can make your decisions from a fully informed position - we're happy to help.

Good luck with your truck, & we hope you'll hang out here on F-150 Online with the rest of us in your spare time!
