Post I'm going nuts here ! Am I insane or something?

As some may know, I recently put in a Superchip module. I expect better shifting and more power at times. Here's the part I have a hard time with.

1st tank of Texaco 316 mile- 27 gal= 11.7MPG
Conditions: Some highway at 70MPH, and playing around with the new chip. Lot's of high RPM mapping.

2nd tank of Sunoco 190 mile- 14 gal= 13.6MPG
Conditions Hauling 800# of freight to a business 80 miles away and the return trip. 70 MPH. Riding through the hills and mountains of PA.

The history on this ride. It's a 5800# land yacht. It gives me 10.3 to 10.6MPG consistantly.

I am having a hard time accepting these #'s.

Any ideas?????????????????

Check out the post in "Engines" called "FYI 99 F-150 owners" It appears we have a MPG robbing problem associated with a wiring harness.

This doesn't apply to the SDs. The computer and harness are on the other side.

Thanks

Hey guys, I finally checked my milage just for the hell of it. I'm getting a little better than 21 miles to a gallon on the highway at 70 mph pulling an empty 4x8 trailer. :-)

Dear Spaceace,

Your gas mileage numbers shows your Superchip clearly improving your gas mileage, something that is a very common result! You state that you normally get only 10.3 to 10.6 mpg consistently. Then you install the Superchip, and your gas mileage has increased. It is entirely within the realm of possibility that you will see 3 more mpg with the Superchip. Another thing that can affect the variance you're seeing in improvement between the 1st & 2nd tanks is different gasoline formulations, as not all gasolines have the same BTU's, or energy content. The more energy content, the better mileage you generally see. It could also simply be the computer adapting to it's new software, as it goes thru it's relearn cycle. As you accumulate the first 600-800 miles, you generally see a bit more improvement with time, you see.

So if I understand your post correctly, your first tank with the Superchip increased to 11.7 mpg, which if we take a 10.6 starting figure, represents about a 10% improvement in gas mileage. Then your next tank, at 13.6 mpg, now has you pegging a 28% improvement in gas mileage, as you accumulate more miles and the computer goes thru it's relearn. This is something that is normally seen on the F-250 5.4's, Spaceace. I have a large number of customers driving that same vehicle, and they normally start out at 9-10 mpg stock, and they usually end up at 12-13 mpg with the Superchip, as a result of the increase spark advance the Superchip uses on part-throttle. (Another excellent example that the Superchip works all the time) That is a very large *percentage* gain, even though it's "only" 3 mpg. It's 3 mpg more than 10.6, and so that's about a 28% inprovement. This is among the higher end of results that we see with the F-150 5.4's, but it's completely typical of the *F-250* 5.4's! That's just the way they tend to respond to the Superchip, when used with high-quality premium gasoline like you've been using.

This means that your long-term results will probably be like ours here are, meaning that your Superchip is not only going to pay for itself, but it may actually put money in your pocket via the gas mileage increase over time. We are getting 2-3 more mpg, and with premium costing us 10-12 cents more per gallon than regular, we are actually spending less money for gasoline with the Superchip, even with the increased cost of premium.

This is an excellent result, if I have correctly interpreted your post, so I say hat's off to you! What you have posted here *is* in fact possible with the Superchip, and the key is, this is typical of the results with the *F-250* 5.4's. The F-150's will see maybe 1.5 to as much as 3 more mpg, but it's not as big of an increase in terms of *percentages* as it is with your F-250.

Congratulations, I don't think you could ask for a better result from your Superchip!

I guess I dont understand how that *proves* anything.

You say that you got 10.3 to 10.6 mpg with regular and with premium you got 11.7 mpg. If we take your best MPG thats a 1.1 MPG improvement.

So it looks like you did get better MPG with premium. If I remember right the article says you can expect 1 mpg improvement....

OK...I reread your post and youre comparing running premium gas to running premium and the superchip.

In order to compare gains by the use of premium fuel you must compare the MPG of regular fuel (87 octane) to the MPG of premium fuel(91 octane or better) .

So again...how did you *prove* premium adds no gains?

Yes your first post does say you used every grade of gas...not. That still doesnt convince me. Ive consistently gotten about 1 mpg better with premium.

You did get better gas mileage. Remember, you has the gas eater 5.4l and you have a very heavy truck. Crew Cab, Long bed, 4x4, thats huge! Gas mileage wont be that good.
