What's your gas mileage?

See Sig. for specs of truck.
In town 13.5 to 13.7
On recent 1800 mile trip, 16.5 at avg. of 72 mph. Actual speed was 80-85 most of the way.
After trip, have 5400 miles and truck is much looser. Earlier mileage was mostly all in town 35-50 mph.
Will be interesting to see if Sal's airbox mod and Bassani full exhaust will improve this any. Of course, I will have to drive a million miles to realize any real savings.
Use Texaco 93 octane per Mike's advice and it works best for me.

I guess I should be pleased with my mileage. I have tracked every tank since new (missed 2). I now have just over 7000 on it and I get 15.5 to 16.5 on almost every tank. I normaly drive 80% city short (under 5mi) trips. My average over 20 tanks is 15.993. See sig for truck specs.
Thought I should add, I use primarilay Mobile 1, 87.

I have a '97 F-150, 4.2L, 4x2, single cab w/ a short bed. I am currently getting about 10-12 mpg around town. I bought the truck in Feb of this year with 22000 miles on it. I have recently towed a boat from NY to Austin, TX and got 8-9 mpg. Can anyone suggest anything to help my mileage increase?

My first tank of gas netted me 15.3mpg with the chip. That was all city driving, but now I find myself abusing the pedal alittle more. I hope to see better with this next fillup as I'm trying to control myself.

I also own a 4.2L 4x2 with a short bed, however,I average 21 MPG per tank. I would have to think your low mpg (8-9) may indicate a possible mpg problem with your truck. Don't panic just yet, there are simple steps you can take to improve the trucks performance.
When I first bought my 98 XLT I was getting approx.15 mpg - not bad I suppose, however,I made a few changes that resulted in a noticeable difference with fuel mileage.
First,I switched to Mobil1 synthetic oil, then I installed a K&N filter, this combination resulted in a few extra mpg.I then installed an A.R.E tonneau cover, this proved to be the best addition in lowering my trucks fuel consumption.
As regular maintenance,I now add a bottle of Cheveron fuel system cleaner to the gas-tank just before I change the oil, which is at every 6000km. One last thing you may want to try. Disconnect the battery and wait at least 30 minutes. After you re-connect the battery, go out for a drive for at least 20 miles. During this time, accelerate the truck with a heavy foot while you tear down the hi-way, this will help the engine learn a new "adaptive stragedy".
One last note,I use 89.5 octane to tame a pinging problem I have with my engine, however,I can't complain,I'm getting over 20 mpg's!!!
Good Luck

I can get right at 300 miles out of a tank of gas on average, sometimes a little more sometimes a litlle less anyway it works out to about 12.5 MPG I drive about a 50/50 mix of highway / city driving.
I always run 93 octane gas and use either exxon or citgo I have a 5.4L automaatic 4x4ORP supercab shortbed XLT with a Superchip and Airaid intake. I also use only Mobile 1 synthetic oil and have a sportmaster bed cover

Hmmm... Let's see. I have a '98 V6 3.55 reg. cab flareside, 14 months - 16,800 miles. I got 17.7 mpg(a lot of highway driving) last time and 16.6 mpg(I get this usually) before that. I usually drive 70% highway / 30% city. I use Shell premium. Just installed the K&N air filter today, will see if it makes a difference though.

Nitro...
Thanks for the suggestions. I am gonna change to Mobil one for my next oil change and I can see a K&N filter in my future.. unfortunately, I have a toolbox on the bed of my truck that I love having so a tonneau cover is out.. Is a chip worth getting? Does it really make a difference? Again, thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate it..
