Dear Cobra99,

These different codes serve many purposes, the first of which is to determine which vehicle the computer is configured to be installed in. You see, all the different vehicles Ford makes all use the same basic computer (V-10's & Powerstrokes use a different computer), and they control which vehicle it is configured for by it's software, and the hardware revision level of the circuit board itself.

The example I use is this: a 4 cyl. Escort has far less erquipment to control than a big V-8 F-150 4X4, and so it gets a different computer load.

Now the issue of the exact same vehicle, year, make, model, and everything else exactly identical having different computer codes is very common as well. This is done as a result of constant running updates throughout the model year, based of feedback primarily from their service departments at their dealerships. Things such as driveability issues, idle quality, and many other things can cause Ford to make changes in the program, even in the same model year, on the exact same vehicle. You will usually have 6-12 codes per year for the exact same vehicle!

Now the specialty vehicles, such as most SVT vehicles, typically only get 1 or 2 codes per year, as there are far fewer of these vehicles. FOr example, the 1999 Lightning, of which there were only 4000 made, all had teh same computer code, CUX1. But low-volume specialty vehicles are about the only time you get only 1 or 2 codes per model year. The Mustang Cobra is another example, as they generally only have 1 or 2 codes per year. There were 2 model years of Cobra awhile back that used the same code for 2 model years! Very rare.

These different factory software codes for the same vehicle do not affect power output of the vehicle.

I hope that helps your understanding of these many codes,
