Dear Drifter,

Well, if you aren't getting detonation (pinging, sounds like marbles in a can kinda/sorta) when you use 87 octane, then there is no reason to use the higher octane. A lot more FOU1's than any other code will ping dead-stock using 87 octane, so that is why those owners go to 89 octane, to stop the pinging. If you are not affected by this, then don't spend the additional money for 89.

The Superchip will require the use of premium gasoline, usually 92 octane or higher. This number drops at higher elevations, as premium gas from about 4000 ft. on up is usually 90-91 octane, and that's fine too.

Just remember, if your truck doesn't ping on 87, there is no reason to go any higher until you install the Superchip.

Dear Danny,

Wow, this is sure an old thread!

The computer code tells us what software revision is in your vehicle's computer from the factory. The exact same identical year, make, & model of vehicle can have dozens of different software revisions throughout the course of just one model year. By programming for each individual code, you get a much better program, as it is developed for your specific vehicle, instead of being a "generic" type of program that is compromised to be used on all similar vehicles.

Have fun with your new toys!
