Thumbs up BRAND NEW EXPEDITION FOR ONLY $264.40

$225 - SuperChip
$25 - Taxes & shipping
$14.40 - Homemade 3" air intake

The 3" intake made the engine free, very noticeable!

The Superchip made the engine like new. The trans is SOOOOooooooooooooooooooo much better... Basically this chip took the "SLOP" outa the trucks driveability and gave it QUITE A BIT more acceleration. This was with 87 Octane. Gotta run that tank out to put in fresh 93!!!

I can't believe how much Ford screws with these trucks so Mom and Grandma might buy one! You can really feel the difference between shifts. The truck no longer "nose dives" at WOT when shifting!!! It kicks and PULLS HARDER through every gear!

My expedition has a 3.73 rear. It revs in 1st very quickly and used to bog when it hit second. 3rd was A JOKE! Now, 2nd is my BEST gear with more PULL and acceleration than 1st. 3rd is scarey! Dont like to get a 5500 lb beast going 80! They dont stop that well!

Cudos to Mike T and the Superchip.

INSTALLATION?

A BREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE!!!!!!!!!!

Took me 2 times cause I didn't scrape that GOO off the contacts very well! Removing the battery is the only hard part, and thats easy enogh itself!

First off, I know I asked a LOT of questions and put a few through some hell! I'm a VERY tough customer! I feel you can NEVER ask enough questions! I also VERY MUCH appreciate ALL the input, time and effort from everyone who posted answers/comments to my postings!

Mike T: The check engine light went off when I pulled the chip! Trying to run the gas out. Been driving ALL day with the OD turned off..... THEN I WILL FILL IT WITH 93 OCTANE! If I get another check engine light, which I doubt, I will call you!

AS for the 3" intake (deep breath):

Bought at Home depot - A 3" rubber coupling about 1/2 inch thick of rubber that came with clamps on both ends. Two 3" PVC couplings (male ends).

1.I cut the stock housing that holds the filter and ground it down smooth.

2. I then ground the 3" PVC coupling to a bevel. To fit into the stock housing. This makes a HUGE 3" opening in the housing. You might have to grind the other coupling on one side as welll... The one thats gonna go into the fender.

3. I then forced the PVC coupling into the housing. Its a tight fit (which is what you want). Only put it in 1/4 to 3/8"... Be careful NOT to cut too much off! Measure and/or gestimate!

4. Drilled 3 holes throuhg the housing and through the PVC pipe. Place 3 metal screw in so it stays.

5. Used Marine "GOOP" which stand up to heat and water, etc... Place that all around the outer and inner edges where the two meet! This seals them together very well. Don't be stingy with the stuff, Goop it on... It dries smooth! I painted the pipe black before assembly...

6. Take the other 3" male to male coupling and heat it with a torch until soft. Then use a hammer to drive it into the hole in the fender. It forms itself to the hole very well!

7. The 3" rubber coupling holds the 2 PVC peices together!!!! And allows for some movement in case your off a bit.

NOTE: Take measurements, your gonna have to cut one of the the pipes! I recommend the one that goes into the fender...

This makes a HUGE 3 inch pipe into the K&N AND allows the air to travel smoothly from the fender area.....

I also modified, some time ago, the K&N...
I took a stock filter and sawed off the cone shaped plastic tip. I use MARINE GOO to make it adhere to the K&N.....

Everything I did looks VERY professional and I have been given compliments to the job!

HI Rand,

Andthensometoo is right, we all sure did put a lot of MB's here on the message boards with all the inquiries and responses back and forth on this one! And that's one of the best parts of being here on F150online, the ability to gather knowledge and tap on the experiences of others who have "been there, done that". It helps us all to avoid the infamous "pay to learn" syndrome when dealing with aftermarket parts.

I'm glad you are enjoying your new Superchip. From our conversation today, I'm sure you'll enjoy it much better when you've got premium in the tank like it's made for!

I especially enjoyed your comments about how strong second gear is now, and I can tell you exactly why. First, during and right after the 1-2 upshfit, the power-robbing spark retards are removed. Then, we delay the onset of torque converter lockup until redline in second gear when you are at full-throttle. The factory program locks up the torque converter at anywhere from 3000-3500 rpm, and you lose about 100 lbs./ft. of torque when that happens. The Superchip restores that power the factory program "robbed", so the difference in second gear is very noticeable indeed.

Have fun,

Dear FordyFour,

Rand and our company are both in the same state, and that is why he had to pay sales tax. This will happen in any state that has sales taxes, if both the seller and the vendor are in the same state. It doesn't matter where the product ships from, it matters where the *transaction* takes place.

Hey Rand,

Don't worry about a thing, everyone has to get what *they* feel is the information they need to make that kind of decision, and that's exactly why we're here, to answer those questions. You took advantage of that, just as you're supposed to, and a lot of people joined in, and we have some interesting threads, in which a lot of good information was exchanged as a result. Sounds good to me!

Your check engine light may have been due to running it hard with regular gas in it with the Superchip, which of course we urge everyone *not* to do, as the Superchip is made specifically for use only with premium gas. But we'll know that for sure only when you do get premium in it, and reinstall the Superchip. Your VXX2 code has been around for years, and it's a good stable program, so you shouldn't have a recurrence, but if you do, we'll get to the bottom of it.

As we spoke about over the phone, I suggested that you disconnect the battery to clear the error code, and remove the Superchip until you fill up with premium, then reinstall it. Then we'll see what happens. I've seen a check engine light thrown before on rare occasion from this same thing, running the Superchip on regular, but it is fairly rare. In each case it was due to the differing burn rate of the fuel, and it creating an out of range condition in the ECU. So I'm hoping that is what it is in your case, as there are many other 98 Expeditions with the VXX2 code running the Superchip, with no problems setting check engine lights.

Another thing that can happen is for an O2 sensor to be marginal, and work fine when the vehicle isn't being pushed, but light up whenever you push it. My wife had a 95 Explorer that did that from day 1, it would throw a check engine light anytime I drove it at 75 mph or faster for 2 hours or more. Then when I slowed down, within 20 miles the light would go back out and stay out, until I started running hard again, and it would stay on for as long as I ran it hard. It was just a marginal O2 sensor, it always ran fine and got good gas mileage and great performance, so we never had it replaced. It did it at 500 miles, and it was doing it a 80,000 miles when we traded it in a few years later.

What's the old saying, you live long enough, you see everything?

Give me a call when you fill up with premium!

Things got delayed a bit!!!

I tried to run that tank of 87 out but with this 3" intake I made, it appears to have SEVERELY INCREASED my gas mileage!! (Watched pot never boils???)

HOWEVER, the dealer who installed my new FQR 5.4 supposedly fixed an oil leak! Oil was POURING out of the connection where the remote oil filter hoses connect to the block....I had it towed in... They fixed it! Well, it started leaking again! So, its at the dealers for the SAME problem!

PISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSED!

Once I get it back and run all that super-duper 87 octane out, I will re-fill it with 93 and put the chip back in!

Letcha know!

Dear Rand,

What a bummer! I'm sorry to hear that your new 5.4 engine is leaking oil, but hopefully it will be a simple and quick fix, so you can get back to using your vehicle.

Let us know what happens, and good luck!
