Question which chip?

99 F150 5.4L 85K Dual FlowMaster(they're great)
I'm finally looking for a performance chip. Are there any suggestions or flags I should be aware of? Also, is it necessary to run a higher octane fuel?

Hi Hagen,

Welcome to F-150 Online!

The first thing you'll want to know about is how to access the Search feature that is provided here for this exact purpose (getting you the exact info you want very quickly). The icon to access Search is in the upper right portion of your screen here, and that is your key to instantly unlocking all the info that is already here.

Your question "what's the best chip?" is the exact same question that the tens of thousands of people who have come here have asked - so it's been asked & answered literally hundreds (if not thousands) of times before. Which is great for you, as that means it is very quickly answered by simply using the Search feature and/or spending some time reading the threads here. You can use the search feature to retrieve & read posts on any topic you want to know more about - for example, recently a member here who goes by the name "openclasspro" tested the Diablo chip, the "standard' Superchips #1715 Micro Tuner, and then our (meaning us here at Troyer Performance) in-depth custom tuning, and posted his results. Our tuning beat the next best performance tune he tested by 4 tenths in the 1/4 mile on his truck.

In addition to reading some of the posts here, you'll probably want to also drop by our web site to take a look at the various types of tuning products - for example, there are single and multi-program "chips," and there are also multi-program "flash" devices - hand-held programmers that you can upload the performance tuning instead of installing a chip. Either one works fine of course, but you'll want to know about both basic types to make your decision. Here's a link where you'll want to read up on the following part #'s: 5500, 6600 & 9100 - those are the newer 4-bank technology products that will get you the best performance and power gains. Here's the link: http://www.troyerperformance.com/cgi...chips%3BFoMoCo

Most people here have us provide their tuning because we've specialized in tuning the F-150 for well over a decade & have a strong track record of excellent results & many happy customers.

There are 2 main things to look out for: first, that the performance tune is individual vehicle code-specific, instead of being "generic" like most are - that way you get a performance tune made for *your* individual vehicle, and not one that has been compromised to run on all similar vehicles - this makes a significant difference in the actual results. Second, it's also important that the performance program actually tunes for more power *all* the time, at any throttle position as well as at all rpms. Many chipmakers only tune at full-throttle, where there are no emissions standards to be met (a little-know fact about the emissions laws) - though they advertise power gains "throughout the rpm range," because you can be at full-throttle at any rpm - which makes many people *think* it's adding power all the time at any throttle position, when it's only at very heavy throttle. The rest of the time there are no gains, and this is done by numerous chipmakers because it's much cheaper - you eliminate all the emissions R&D work by not making any changes to the engine tuning in all the areas where there are any emissions standards that have to be met (which is any time you are at less than about 80-82% throttle), so that's almost all the time you are behind the wheel.

From there, it's really a matter of whether you prefer the traditional "chip" to deliver the performance tuning to the vehicle's PCM or the newer type of hand-held tuner for a simple 10-minute plug-n-play installation. Either works fine and gives the same performance results, there are simply some price & feature differences - you can read up on all of that at the link to our web site I posted above for you.

I hope this brief info will be helpful, and please do take some time to read some of the post here from other members to see what they have to say. And of course, if you'd like to go over any of this in more detail, please feel free to give us a call at our number listed below, we'll be happy to help.

Thanks for joining us & we hope you'll hang out here with us here on F-150 Online in your spare time!

Best of luck whatever you decide,
