Post Octane, How much?

Mike T,

At what octane level do we no longer see
any measurable results with the chip? I am running 93 now and when I go to Milan tomorrow I have a chance to use racing fuel.
If I mix 110 with my 93 I will be increasing the octane. So at say 100 octane will I see any measurable increase, or am I wasting my money? Maybe I will just fill up with Sunoco 94 before I leave.

Thanks

Jean Marc Chartier

Hi JMC!

Good question!

To get the rated pwoer gains requires the use of 92 octane at sea level altitude. Using more octane may get you a little bit more power, but anything much over about 94 won't get you anything more, so I wouldn't waste any money mixing in some 100 octane racing gas at the track, for example.

Due to the burn rate variations in ultra-high octanes, the factory fuel system just isn't designed to really make proper use and take full advantage of say, 100+ octane fuels, so I wouldn't bother with anything more than say, Sunoco Ultra 94.

Good luck at the track, I can't wait to see what times you're running now with the headers, especially after all you've been thru with the G-Tech unit you guys have been using up there. Glad you discovered it was the wheel hop causing those problems making the G-Tech's numbers way off.

Mike T,

Well I managed a 16.390 @ 82.86 mph on Saturday at Milan. Unfortunately we only had time for 2 runs and my second was 16.537 @ 81.76 mph. One sad note, Neal couldn't make it he had exhaust problems before leaving Windsor. On the positive side ATST didn't back up at the track.

Hi JMC,

Uh-oh, I know Neal wasn't a happy camper!!

Isn't that a good bit quicker than you ran last time, before you installed the headers? What was your previous track time? It seems like a low 16-second run for that very heavy 4.6 you've got is pretty darn good.

Glad to hear ATST didn't back up this time, I hope she had fun too!

Hey JMC,

So how much ET difference do you figure you had between the run at the track before your headers, and the next run at the track with headers?

Mike,
My best run w/o headers April 15th 2000 was 16.831 @ 79.66 mph. Last time out Sept 30th 2000, I could only get 2 runs in. I ran without my son the winch or tail gate (245 lbs less ) than April 15 th and ran 16.390 @ 82.86 mph My best run with 145 lbs less weight ( winch & tailgate off, son in truck) was 16.537 @ 81.76 mph. To put things into prospective and to add the additional 10ths for the weight descrepency I ran almost 2 10ths better. I will be back at Milan on the 14th and I should have the winch back on by then so I can get a better Idea. 2 runs was not enough to compair differences.

Regards

Jean Marc Chartier

PS. when Neal isn't looking I will unplug his chip and then stand back and watch the fire works.....

HI JMC,

OK, so no exact "back-to-back" numbers, but you figure the headers were probably worth roughly about 2 tenths, basically.

I'd say that's a pretty good result from a set of headers on a 2-ton+ pickup truck!

Question

Hi Mike!!

Just trying to figure out a few things before I purchase my Superchip!!

Living up here in Canada our "Super" Unleaded fuel is rated at 91 octane. Living In Calgary, Alberta (Canada) we are about 3400 feet above sea level....will this combination of octane rating and sea level hurt me anyway in performace as far as getting the biggest bang for my buck out of the Superchip??

Look forward to your response!

Hi 2001,

That's a good question, and one that comes up often among those who live at higher altitudes.

The Superchip will still be the best bang-for-the-buck mod, that 91 octane at your elevation will be just fine; as altitude increases, oxygen content in the atmosphere, and octane demand both drop, and that is why you only see 91 octane at your elevation. In some places here in the US at even higher altitudes, 8000 ft. and higher in some places, their "premium" gas is only 90 octane, and their "regular" is only 85 octane, for all the same reasons.

The Superchip will still give you the same approximate percentage gain in power, so you'll still see another 10%-12% more peak hp, for example, even though your total power numbers, both stock and chipped, will of course be lower at your altitude. For every 1000 ft. above sea level, you will lose 3.5% of your power in a normally-aspirated gasoline engine, so at 3400 ft., you have lost approximately 11.9% of your power because of your elevation, just to give you a rough idea.
