Thanks Mike for the info. I'm just in the process of installing new aftermarket part on my truck, so hopefully they won't give any trouble when it comes to warranty work. Here's the next upgrade.

Hi Fordification,

You can kiss your powertain warranty goodbye when you install a supercharger in most cases, so I hope you were kidding about hoping you didn't run into warranty issues, as you can count on that being an issue.

After seeing the flood of ups and downs, I did some quick math.

Assuming a 1 mpg average mileage increase
with the chip. This is based on posts here
and my driving style/habits. Mostly city
driving. 12,000 miles per year which is
close to my actual.

Cost of chip and fuel increase over 2 years.
$411 Based on dyno chart approx 16 HP rear
wheel gain, and shift improvements. For the
record my truck is a 5.0 but gets similar HP
numbers to the 4.6.

Jacobs ignition. Same miles/driving style.
Cost of ignition and fuel savings over 2
years. $16 returned to my pocket.

Total difference of $426. Put this into
pulleys, intake, and shift improvements.
Combined with ignition, two year total will
be roughly equal price. Power increases at
the wheels once again very close.

Superchip would cost $73 extra a year to
operate . The other route saves $208 a year.

A difference of $281 a year after you hit
the "break even" point on paying for the
mods equal in HP to the chip.

In all fairness, the '97s and up may still
have to get a chip to correct the downshift
delay problem. The early trucks don't have
that "feature".

From what I've seen here the chip is a great
performance improvement. I'll probably get
one with my next round of mods. But as far
as "Bang for the buck", it depends how you
add the numbers.....

The chip comes out ahead in ease of
installation and making all the changes with
one product. The other route comes out
ahead in long term operating cost savings.

I guess I'll pick both!

Cool

I ordered my Superchip last Thursday and received it yesterday. Installed it today without a hitch. What a great product! My truck ran -good- before, but even better now. Mike offered unprecedented help and assistance if needed, too.

I ended up with about 5 gallons of 87 octane in the tank, but did want to get the chip installed while I had the time for the project. I put the Superchip in, but didn't reset by disconnecting the battery. My plan is to use up the last of the lower octane gas, then fill up with high octane and only THEN reset the computer. At least I was able to get the chip installed today rather than wait for a less convenient time.

After 35 replies on this topic there shouldn't be much left to say but here's my .02 cents worth anyway.

My main reason for installing the Superchip was for the increase in torque to pull a 30' 5th wheel and I'm quite pleased with the results. She stays in overdrive much better since installing the chip. And she just flat runs away with my horse trailer or my flatbed with 3- 1,500 lb rolls of hay.

Now for the additional benefits. My hwy mileage at 70 mph increased from a 15.5 mpg average to a best of 17.9 mpg.

And regards to warranty work. Last week my truck started running on 7 cylinders. I told the shop foreman about the chip and asked if it would be a problem. He said he would plug in and see what happens. It did give him some kind of error code and he told me it was a good thing I had warned him. Turned out the heater hose had started leaking on the #4 coil module and shorted it out. After he replaced the coil he told me the chip must be doing something right because he pulled the #4 spark plug and it looked brand new with 31,000 miles on it.

The same mechinic called me at home the next day wanting to know where to get one as he had a friend with a V-10 who was very interested in buying one after he told him about my truck. I gave him Mike's number.

And that's another benefit. Anyone here will tell you that when you get the chip you also get Mike, and he will do whatever it takes to make you happy with the product.

Good luck on your choice.
Mark

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen, they're greatly appreciated, and the check is in the mail.

It all gets down to what F-150 Online is all about, the exchange of relevant information.
Being able to come here and see the kind of nicely detailed and directly relevant posts from so many, like "Conocoan" in his thread about towing results with & without the Superchip, and so many others that have been posted here over the past couple of years. The people who are willing to give of their time & effort to provide factual information on everything from parts to TSB's & warranty issues to you name it, is what provides the backbone, the very heart & soul of this web site, and *that* is why we support F-150 Online.

Thanks to all of you for your efforts to help all of us!
