Talking Reprogram for headers? Hey Mike...

I am almost ready to take the header plunge.. What brand do you recommend,
and how much would the primary tube affect the low end power? I haven't really
asked around that much yet as to see how many different sizes are available.
Eventually I will install a supercharger also,so what if any changes in injector sizes will be needed. Should I leave them alone until I get the SC,or would there be any benefit from them with the headers? So many questions,,sorry, only
one more... Will I need to get my chip reburned for the headers, then again for the supercharger? Thanks for being here
to help us out when we need you,,,,,,98

Hey 98,you won't have to have your chip reburned for the headers, but you will for a supercharger.I have the gibson's on my truck with about 21,000 miles on the exhaust and have not had any problems with them. I installed the headers and cat-back at the same time and i expected to loose bottom end but it actually helped out. As for injector size the stock injectors will work but it is recommended to upgrade in size and have the chip burded for that size injector hopfully mike can help us out with this one because i am also looking to increase injector size to 24lb or 30lb depending on what he recommends for my application. Hope this helps you out, Dwight

Question

How much did they end up costing you?
I am going to attempt the install of them
myself. I've done almost everything you can to a car or truck.......98

Cool

Cool,I've almost ordered those a few times. They sound like great deal, usually
$200 dollars is the cost of the coating itself! I am also going to order a roll pan,
I won't do it til I'm at home in jan.,too much to go wrong shipping wise. I pretty much live on the road,so mail order is iffy
at best. Let me know,,,,98

Hi Screamer,

I would advise going with the JBA headers they have here in the F-150 Online Store, and have them Jet-Hot coated, stay aware from the "bargain brands", as you get what you pay for, at best. And headers is one area where you do *not* want to take any "shortcuts". Also, you might want to talk to Roger Lemere directly, who runs the F-150 Online store (916-361-2510), and ask him if he can get you a set of locking header bolts, so that you don't have to re-torque the standard header bolts a dozen times in the first 60 days after installation, as that is an issue you have to deal with no matter what brand of headers you select.

We can do a custom program to pull more power out with your headers, but this is generally not required. If you pick up some detonation after installing the headers, then we'll need to compensate for them, but that usually doesn't happen. Just listen for detonation after installing the headers.

Yes, of course you will need a custom program when you install the supercharger, and since the custom programming fee is a flat fee, I would suggest at that time, that we compensate for the headers then, since it won't cost any additional at that time, that seems to make the most sense in your situation.

With regards to fuel injector sizing, this is another area where most people don't know what to do, quite naturally. The vast majority of supercharger kits will include an FMU/FRU (fuel management unit/fuel regulation unit, they do the same thing) that will allow you to use the same stock injector size, which is 19 lb. on all 1997 & newer non-Lightning F-150's.

The "correct" way to do this is to *not* use an FMU/FRU, but to install the correct injector size instead. You see, the FMU/FRU unit will block the return side of the fuel supply, which boosts fuel pressure to the injectors, thus delivering much more fuel. This makes the fuel injectors work much harder to seat the pintle against this much higher rail pressure, but it's cheap and it works to keep the motor from going lean, as it's always way too rich, that's how most blower manufacturers handle this.

The "correct" way to do this is to caluculate your injector size needed, and here is the formula for doing just that: you will need 1/2 lb./hr. of injector capacity for each horsepower your engine makes. With the 19 lb. injectors the F-150 uses stock, they can support a maximum of 304 horsepower, and that is at 80% duty cycle, by the way. You can probably get 315-320 hp out of the 19lb. units in the 8 cylinder, making the injector work at above 80% duty cycle, but that isn't the smart way to do things.

So what you do is to estimate your power level with the supercharger, let's say that is going to be 365 hp at the flywheel. OK, we take that 365 hp, and we divide it by 2, to get 182.5. We then divide that by the number of cylinders, in this case 8, and we get a figure of 22.81 lbs./hr. of injector size that is needed. So you would use a 24 lb. injector for 365 hp.

Give me a shout if you have any questions on this!

Have fun,

The gibson's were $279 and the jba's were something like $389, I was told by a couple different venders that sell both brands that they are made at the same location. As for the install it went very well from start to finish it took about 5 hours to install headers and cat-back, If you need any help let me know because i see you live in north houston and i live at 249 and 1960

Cool

I may take you up on that offer, dwight.
It would go quicker with two people on it.
I wouldn't mind meeting someone from the boards, either. Other than this site,I don't know anyone personally that owns an F-150.....well,a friend of mine owns a beat up "80" 6 cylinder, lol. No a/c,in Houston! He must love extreme discomfort, lol.

Hey Mike,
thanks for the info. I only have detonation
when I spend alot of time at WOT. It's not that often,so it doesn't worry me too much, yet. It may get worse with the headers, hope not. When I put the headers on I will still be under 304HP,correct? I am also planning to use a Jacobs ignition, and some Accel coil packs. Does this sound like a good idea? I've never used an aftermarket ignition on any vehicle, aside from a hotter
coil and some Accel wires. Jacobs is claiming an increase of about 13HP on a
93 Lightning, could this be true? Could it do that much for these trucks,or would the gain be minimal, considering the quality of
the current ignitions. Thanks,Mike,,,,98

So,how many guys can fit in an F-150 wheel well, lol. I live at Airline and Parker,
just outside the loop. If you want to brave the neighborhood, come on over. I won't
be home til the middle of Jan. so it may be a little chilly.......And of course I'll have to get the headers first. Looking forward to it,,,,,98

p.s.I've got the tools and work lights to get it done, just need the pipes........=)

Hello, I just put on my set of coated pacesetters headers. Went very good on drivers side. On passenger side I had to take off starter to put on and tighten one header bolt on bottom. Exaust hooked up like it should, only problem was the bolts they sent was only one inch long instead of two&half inchs long for exhaust pipes. Will be putting on Gibson cat back this weehend.

Hey 25_Ag,

I just wanted to touch base with you, to see if you were able to find the problem with your remote start yet?

Yeah there is a wire that is not connected to anything and I grounded it and tried it it didn't do anything. The alarm still worked but no remote start. So just on a hunch I ungrounded it and tried it agian, works fine. I'm guessing that grounding it either reset it or cleared it. It was acting like it was locking up at a certian point in the start. Oh well works now.
BTW love the chip

98 drop me a line when ever your going ot do it if you want small set of hands. winton25@hotmail.com

Thanks Mike,
I guess I'll go with Accel on all parts, they
have yellow wires, right? I'm not picking wires by color, but I have red wire looms with yellow tie wraps. It would look great
with a little more yellow. Do you have any
opinions on those colored vacuum lines?
Just wondering. Man,it hasn't been that long since I was in a appearance parts shop! They are full of unrecognizable stuff now. Strobe lights, spoilers, bulbs of
every imaginable color,wire looms,,etc..
etc..etc...Now I know why some of those
rice burners look so hopeless,,,it's indescision! LOL,,,,98
