>>>Dropping into 2nd going 75 mph.... <<<
Preface: we're talking about F-150's with automatic transmissions here................
Just as an aside............we actually LOWER that speed in many of our custom F-150 tunes. The factory allows dropping it into second at speeds well over 90 mph, some over 100 mph in these F-150's - but that isn't safe for the powertrain (and is many times above the rev limiter or top speed limiter anyway), so we lower than to just 80 mph max in many of our custom F-150 tunes, to protect the powertrain.
Will it actually "hurt" the motor to drop it into 2nd at 75 mph?
Well, not in and of itself, but I wouldn't do that on any kind of frequent basis. Also, you're right about peak power there anyway (depending on gearing & tires), and the 2-3 WOT upshift is usually in the 76-82 mph range in our custom tunes - again, the exact number depends greatly on gearing & tire size - so you usually would be better off jsut letting it accelerate in 3rd gear. In other words, I wouldn't do a 75 mph downshift into 2nd gear in an F-150 automatic unless my brakes failed and I needed emergency compression braking from the engine, perhaps.
Just more trivia.....................
