Xcal2: 1st impressions and question

Hello to All,
After a long wait, my package finally came, yahoo... I read all the data that come with the unit. The download went very well. Quite easy to do as a matter of fact. My 3 tunes are as follows. I went with the 87 perf, 93 perf and 93 tow... I loaded the 87 perf. I felt the difference right away. I am quite thrilled with the throttle response and tranny shifting of even the 87 tune. It will break free the rear tires from a stand still easy enough now. Highway speed is now no longer a problem, gets up and goes like a banshee... I do have a question. I am getting some pre-detination (pinging) at about 90% wot from a standstill, and some at wot at speed? I have only cycled it 2 times since last night. Probably needs to cycle more to learn? I am quessing that my gas could be an issue also. I only loaded the 87 tune to see how well it really was compared to stock tune. Amazingly superior to stock!!! I will burn up about a 1/4 tank of the 87 and fill her up with the 93. I am quessing it is the lower 87 octane that is causing the pinging? Thanks for any responses... This thing does rock!!!!!!!! Thanks Mike, any thoughts?

I would try a different brand of gas 5.4 Now that I have the x-cal I can hear the slightest ping for one second if I floor it from a stop. It goes away instantly and I am getting no pinging any other time. I would say give it a few drive cycles and try different gas. THe power is wonderful isn't it?

I am very impressed with it, very strong now. Even at 87. My thoughts is that this will go away at 93 octane. It does go away instantly. Every one please understand I am not bashing the XCAL2. I love it, just a little issue that will go away as the tune learns...

Congratulations, 5.4! Mine is still on track for delivery tomorrow (Friday 23rd) so hopefully it'll come on time and I can load it this weekend for some "analysis" myself.

I'm concerned for you that you're experiencing some detonation. There's been some small talk on this board about early detonation but Mike had replied that this is rare. Hopefully a gas change and some more cycle time will eliminate the problem. I have always used either Shell or Mobil in my truck, do other members think these fuels are okay with the XCAL?

Keep us posted on your progress. Are you going to load the 93 tune this weekend?

Yes, I am going to burn up the rest of the tank then fill her up with 93 octane!!!! I have all the confidence in the world that this will go away with fresh gas and more driving cycles. I was using Sunoco gas, but I heard on the board that they might be a problem. I am going to try Mobil......... If 87 gives this kind of boost to performance, then 93 is going to be real sweeeeeeet...

I would think that you would want to fill your tank with more than 1/4 capacity of the 93 in order to fully take advantage of the tune....a 1:4 mix of 93 and 87 sure does not make sense to me....

EDIT:

nevermind...seems as if you clarified....

I think maybe he was trying to increase the octane of the current tank full hoping to eliminate the pinging.

5.4,

Im glad your Xcal2 is working out. It seems for the most part everyones does. I however, am having similar problems with spark knock.

I wrote a post last week regarding this. It recieved poor response due to the fact that I didnt call Troyer first. I can understand that. I should have called customer service first. Can't blame a guy for protecting his business. So, I guess Im saying it wasnt an attempt at slander.

Moving along. Again, Im glad you like your xcal2. I too, like the shift points and throttle response. I think they are greatly improved. Im a little dispointed in the spark knock. I try not assume much but, I think due to a lean condition during acceleration. I did call Troyer(Anita) and she said they need A/F ratios to tweek the program. I could get A/F's at a number of shops and then datalog the rest with the xcal2. But, Im gonna get a full dyno done. This may take a couple weeks though. My uncle says he's got a guy and can get it done cheap. So, until then my xcal2 sits in its box and I run my stock program.

I spoke with TP, I am going to continue with the 87 octane fuel from a different company, I can get Shell or Citgo. This only happens for a second then it goes right away. I have the utmost confidence this is not an issue with the unit, but a fuel issue... later...............

5.4, good choice on gas. I personally waited to put my X2 on and upload a new tune until my "cheap" gas was out of the tank at which point I filled up at Chevron. I won't run cheaper/offbrand stuff in my truck for that reason...mine never pinged, but I'm not going to give it the chance, because like you, I have the utmost confidence that this would be a cheap fuel issue if it ever arose. But damn the X2 is nice

Hi everyone, new to the board and the world of trucks in general. How dangerous is pinging under these circumstances? I've hear of trucks blowing the sparkplug right out of the socket, is that the danger we are talking about? Or is it more an annoyance?

Hi. Good question.

Damage to bearings, pistons, piston skirt coatings, and generally NOT GOOD for performance due to the timing that gets pulled out.

Besides sounding chitty

If it's detectable even with a functioning knock sensor system, it's time to get it addressed, asap.

The plug issue is separate - and largely due to improper installation - usually too much torque being used. Here's a link to read that elaborates - from someone who knows

https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...rk+plug+torque

Cheers

I think i am experiencing the same thing, can you try to be more specific about what the "ping" sounds like. I have the exact same issue running the 91 perf. tune, i just dont know what the sound is.
My brother heard it also from his truck next to me at a few lights when we were"racing" 0-80 and said it sounded like my catylitic converter rattling or something???

Yup - when I heard it, it sounded like 'rattling' ... different gas cured it

Oh, I still got gas, but it's good gas
