After hundreds of dollars....blown motor!
Hello all, it's been a while since I was in this part o' the forums. I got a story for you all.
Ordered the Stage 1 kit from Troyer Performance (with #6600 chip instead of 1715 programmer) for my beautiful '97 XL 4x4 Reg Cag Long Box.
Had problems with the chip install so was going through the PROPER channels of calling TP and NOT posting help questions here.
Anyways, kept chip on stock tune whilst the chip situation was going on. I already installed the AF1 intake (what a gorgeous piece of craftsmanship, the sound of it is sweet! ) and had the SIDO welded on 2 days after the AF1 was installed.
I filled up on 91 octane in preperation for the chip previously when I received the UPS shipment. The truck had NEVER ran any better, and she ran what I would say is perfectly for 135k on her prior to any mods.
So 2 days before Christmas, my brother came down from CO. and I had only the AF1 and exhaust together for 2 days. He was going to help me put on the harmonic balancer and Gatorback belt.
Anyways, he has a '04 Cummings diesel with The Edge so I had to show off my modest mods, right?
WRONG! ROFLOMFGLMFAOLOL...We took my truck out on a country road spur, and lit 'em up! I had 285/75/16's so you know the truck was screaming when I was leaving posi tracks for about 10' (it's only a 4.2L btw) and getting from 0 to 60 in about 8-1/2 to 9 seconds. Not too accurate as was using CD player for timer (omfg)
Wrapped EVERY gear @ 5300 to 5500 rpms from 1st to 35ishto 2nd through 60ish and 3rd to about 75ish and then I would let off. Generally being stupind, I know. :o
On about the 6th or 7th try (I know...) there was a slight ticking like lifter noise and the oil gage was in sinc with the rpms (would drop when I took foot off of gas). Changed the oil the next morning (brought it with me) and it sounded like it went away....until I drove around a bit. CLANKITY, CLANKITY, GUGUCK GUGUCK (with a grinding sound in there too) etc.
Thanks for reading this far!
Long (sorry) story short, went shoppin' for a new F-150 and got an '05 STX 4.6L. Perfect for my needs, will add to signature later.
Umm, Mike? You there? LMFAO...I am thinking about doing it all over again but this time with the XCAL II! Be expecting a call
Hope you all had a better Christmas and New Year than I did.

OUCH!!!
Sounds like it lost oil pressure and gave up the ghost at that point. I really hate to see that happen to anyone, and truth be told, 135K miles is not too late to mod a motor and have fun with it - most of us have heard legendary tales (and we have been directly involved in) many, many cases of taking 150K mile 5.0 Mustangs, throwing a supercharger or nitrous on them,a nd beating the snot out of them for another 50K miles or so.
These kinds of failure can happen at ANY time - though yes, it is more prone with miles on them, it really is rare with the 45.2 V6 - give you an idea how rare. Years & years ago, we did the very first supercharged 4.2 V6 F-150 -now the 4.2 V6's crank, rods & pistons can take more abuse than it's 4.6 & 5.4 counterparts, that is well known by many of the V6 fanatics, in terms of percentage of power gains and still live.
Well, we were running 12 PSI boost on our customer's truck with an intercooler, and this truck, which was a long-cab big-bed 4x4 with the Off-Road package (something that has not been available in years with a V6), and that 5500 (empty) lb truck has to tow a 5000 lb trailer every day, Monday thru Friday, and then go drag-raced on the weekends. Well, at 3500 ft altitude, it ripped off 5-something second 0-60 times, and last I heard, it had about 170K miles on it and STILL had never even had the valve covers off of it - that's right, we did that on a completely STOCK 4.2 V6 engine and it lived for many tens of thousands of miles.
SO it really isn't' "normal" to have a 4.2 V6 let go, unless it's just had some bad luck, even with 135K miles - in fact, I'd rather pound on a 135K mile 4.2 V6 than a 135K miles 5.4 F-150, in many cases.
I hate to hear what happened, but since it did happen, that tells us that *something* was going to happen pretty soon even if you had left it in bone-stock trim - that would be my guess, though I know that doesn't make you feel any better.
I guess the best I can do is to say my condolences, and congratulations on your next new F-150, which I hope you will enjoy for many years!
Good luck my friend,

Great story Mike...it is a bittersweet situation that I'm in...lost the truck I love but gained a brand new (22 miles on it when I bought it) '05. You know?
I personally side with the 5 speed myself so this automatic is very different for me :P
I always knew the my little 4.2L was tough, but back to back to back etc, excessive wrappin' out the RPMs, I should've known. Lesson learned, I guess.
The thing that upsets me is that for the 2 days with ONLY the AF1 & SIDO, she sounded great and ran better than ever! 1 month old tires on it, $500 itself plus the Stage 1...I'm an idiot! (No comments needed )
The cool thing is that the dealership took the truck with blown motor and paid the rest of the loan off...had it for 2-1/2 years...so it was a wash for the trade in. I didn't gain on the deal, but I only have 1 payment still.
I will probably give you guys & gals a call tomorrow.

Thanks, tigga!
You are funny dude. Your posts always give me a good laugh. I try to look at the bright side of the new truck.....along with 5 years of payments! ROFL
Gotta save up again..grrrrr..
LMFAO...1st mod completed....Took off dumb STX 4x4 stickers! Oh yeah, dealership badge too! At least until they pay me to put it back on and advertise for 'em.
