Tuners and 4WD

This may be a stupid question, but here it goes (I didn't see anything when I searched):

Does a tuner like Xcal2 or Edge do anything to affect 4wd? I thought the computer has some sort of control over throttle and what not when running in 4 low.

I talked to Marc at Troyer yesterday, but forgot to ask this question. He was very helpful with my other questions. I think I'm about to pull the trigger on the Xcal2.

The Xcal2 will not affect your 4X4 system, as for the Edge I do not know.

Have you been in 4 low since you put your Xcal2 on?

The only reason I am asking is because I do a lot hunting and the 4 wheel low option gets used quite a bit during the season.

Just to add to FX4 Matt's post, I have not seen anything change with either tuner. I used 4wd both hi and lo and no changes, nor any issue with either.

You have two separate shift schedules:

4-low
&
2-hi / 4-hi

The 4-low schedule will shift sooner, i would assume having it hold the gears longer for a lower mph would be nice to stop having unnecessary up-shifts.

...plus if you have FX4 model, 4WD system is programmed from FORD slightly different than Lariat or std 4X4 models.

Hi vjhpac,

NO, there is absolutely no interference from our tuning on 4WD operations, in either high or low range.

4WD engage/disengage functions are historically controlled by the GEM module. The PCM' s impact is only to provide a different set of shift/lock schedules when in 4-LOW - just like all 4WD systems with multi-ranges, dating back to the old manual systems, you Alys had to shift much sooner, that is one of the most basic aspects of 4WD low range operation. The PCM also has a completely different set of shift/lock schedules for when the transmission oil temperature hits a certain range, for example.

Nobody with any sense would alter the 4-low shift schedules when tuning a vehicle - unless maybe it is for a race-only off road rock climber type of application, perhaps - and even then they don't use 4R70-W's or 4R75-E's, or these powertrains, for that matter - they tend to use much lighter 3-speed automatics.

There are numerous *very* strong reasons for not altering how the factory has designed that part of things, meaning the 4-low shift schedules in the PCM - those shift schedules MUST be vastly different due to the tremendous amount of difference in torque multiplication, engine acceleration rates, and numerous other things, in order to properly protect the powertrain.

So the bottom line is no, you will not have any effect on your 4WD system from our custom tuning, so you do not need to worry about that - but it was a god question to ask!

No sure in what way but I read it on the F150 phamphlet. In it, it says FX4 is equipped specially tuned 4WD system.
