Sure Budha05STX, no problem.

Got a few more questions for the pro's.......

After I returned my truck to stock tune, the CEL went away? I'm not sure if that's normal so I drove it around for about 20 miles before I dropped it off at the dealership. The CEL never came back on however.

DTC P1131 - Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 1

DTC P1151 - Lack of Upstream Heated Oxygen Sensor Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean - Bank No. 2

That's the information I found for the codes I pulled with the XCAL2. I'm hoping they find a vacum leak rather then my O2 sensors needing replaced as I just replaced them about 10K miles ago.

I made sure the dealship rep. understood NOT to flash my PCM so I'll be crossing my fingers tonight. He wrote it down on the ticket so hopefully they'll see that. Again, I'm sure I'm over reacting.. I don't think it's common practice for the dealership to just go around flashing PCM's for the heck of it. I've just been worried after reading a few posts on here about dealerships flashing peoples trucks PCM while they were waiting for their tunes.

Your CEL went away when you returned your PCM to stock, just like it would if you would have disconnected the battery to reboot. I am sure the XCal was not causing the CEL. There are several here that do not know that when you return the vehicle to stock, or install another tune from your XCal2 that it wipes the PCM clean so it can relearn the new program (addaptive strategy) all over again..
I am sure that if the Service Manager wrote not to reflash on the work order that you will be fine....

Thanks Marc, that makes sense. I hope the dealership will still be able to figure out the issue my truck has (vacume leak, O2 sensors, etc.) with out the codes since I cleared them out. If not, would my best option be to leave my truck with the current stock tune until the CEL returns and then go back to the dealership?

Its really hard to say...02 sensors can cause a number of issues regarding the CEL. My 04 came from the factory with contaminated upstream 02's and it took several attempts to locate the issues I was having until we discovered the bad 02's..We had a he!! of a time trying to tune it and only after several hours of head scratching did we finally figure it out...
Once I installed new ones we had an easy time of it....

hmmm, I guess it's possible I got a bad set. I just replaced the upstream sensors about 10K miles ago. I went with the Bosch sensors which I think Ford recommends. Either way, once all this is done, I'll be in contact with you all at Troyer to inquire about possibly taking a look at some of my data logging to see if she's still running great. Thanks again for the information.

Hi ChrisT,

Some general info, but first, a question?

How long have you been getting these codes?

Now some general info - First, those codes disappeared because they were cleared - that happens any time you flash the PCM (like when you returned to stock), or if you just disconnect the battery, or if you use the XCal to clear those codes - this does NOT fix the problem, it just clears those codes for a little while.

Now 1131 & 1151 means the truck is running lean on both banks (we don't know HOW lean, of course), and it's running lean because the upstream (front) O2 sensors are not switching - in effect, they are turned off, but in a manner that causes them to be "stuck" lean. Now the answer is to find out *why* they are not switching.

There is some aftermarket tuning that can cause this problem, if people monkey with the wrong things, like EGO Monitoring parameters, and that was done in a value file made by one of the tuning companies a few years ago - we found the problem and helped them solve it. This is actually why i asked how long yo had those codes, as I just went back and looked at the tunes we provide you with, and there is nothing changed in those areas that would cause this (I had to check - of course there shouldn't be, as we do not change those things, but because we have seen it in the past I wanted to check just in case maybe I made a "typo" when tuning - but it's fine in that regard).

The tunes we did for you we did back in April of 2006, and the issue that can cause this in aftermarket tuning is NOT present in your tunes that we did - I checked our records to see who you were and then immediately looked over your tunes just now before I responded here, just to see if perhaps that was caused by us - it shouldn't have been of course, as we have known about this potential issue if you change certain parameters in the EGO monitoring section for year, but I wanted to check to see if I made a "typo", just being human, but everything looks fine there. So anyway, I checked, and all looks fine in your tunes as we originally sent them out, so I am curious as to how long you have had those codes present?

Now usually in that case where the tuning causes it, the codes will appear pretty quickly after installing the tuning, in anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks, and it usually causes codes of 1132 & 1152 (rich, O2's stuck) on the 1997-2003 F-150's that are NOT factory supercharged Lightnings & Harley's - and then causes those 1131 & 1151 (lean with O2's not switching) on the factory supercharged Lightnings & Harley's, as a general rule. But it is possible to have faulty tuning that causes either 1131/1151 or 1132/1152 codes, because it is basically turning off the O2 sensors - and of course, this can also be a mechanical issue, like a PCM that is going bad, a wiring harness issue, bad O2's, and numerous other potential causes.

Please keep us informed on this, it would be a good idea to call us to go over this when you get a chance, just because I am curious as to what is causing this, what the dealership found, etc., OK?

Good luck & talk to you soon,

Hi Mike. I got these codes about a month ago, which was ironically 2 weeks after I replaced my O2 sensors. I'm confident that the codes were not due to the tuning as I've been running them since last April as you noted and have had no issues what so ever. When I got my tunes in April, you had recommended I replace my upstream O2 sensors, which I did and went with the Bosch sensors. I'll call tomorrow to go over this and get your advice. Thanks for your reply. For now, I'm going to run my stock tune (which is miserable) and wait until the CEL comes back on so I can take it back to the dealership and see what they say. Thanks again for your reply.

Sorry Budha05STX, since the CEL was cleared, the dealership could not give me any insight as to what was causing the codes. Once they come back I'll see what they say and get back to you.

Hi Chris,

OK, thanks for the info - obviously it's not related to the tuning, and I didn't think it was, but I did go back into it as soon as I saw your post just to double-check Again, if that had caused the problem it would have happened very quickly after you got the tuning. This goes back years, actually, so I knew it wasn't possible, but I always check just so I feel better.

It will be interesting to see what is going on, but it's where the front O2 sensors are not switching, and when it's 1131/1151, also a lean condition. If it's 1132/1152, then it's rich with O2's not switching. And this can be caused fro a number of things - wrong O2's (rare), O2 harness connected wrong (backwards, or switched from one side to the other), which we have seen happen on numerous occasions, and God knows what all else.

I think your current plan of leaving it on the stock tune and waiting for those codes to come back and have it diagnosed is sound - the one thing I would do just to check is to make sure that the wiring harness for each O2 sensor is connected to the right O2 sensor - the drivers' side on the engine's harness connected to the O2 sensor on the driver side, and vice-versa - but other than that, I think your plan is sound, & let us know what happens!

This is just freak'n AWSOME!
I'm new to the site (and to Ford for that matter) and plan on purchasing an 06 F150 very soon (Thursday). Seeing this type of personal response and customer service commitment is just insane!

Sorry to bring up such an old post but I wanted to give an update as to what may have caused my CEL to come on. I checked my o2's to make sure they were seater properly and checked the connections. Everything seemed fine. I read a good bit on this site about cleaning the MAF sensor and what could possibly be resolved by doing so. I was quite nervous to do this but I found some really great posts here on how to do it. I used the CRC MAF cleaner and cleaned my Air Force One filter at the same time (with K&N cleaning kit of course). I've gone about 600 miles so far and the CEL has not come back. I'm actually leaving tonight from Maryland towing a 6x12 U-Haul to Florida so I'm excited to see how my custom towing tune does on a 1K mile trip. Thanks to everyone who provided some insight on how to resolve my problem.
