Using the Xcal2 to read codes

Can you use the Xcal2 to read codes on other people's vehicles? Or do you have to return the vehicle to stock first?

The edge will work on anybody's anytime, and I figured the Xcal was the same, I just didn't want to write it without making sure first.

I'm pretty sure I read in my book that I could read codes on any Ford\Mercury from 95 to present.
