yes you will have to reprogram, I worked in MT for the summer at about 3000' coming from 6000' and I had detonation like crazy. and for the guy looking for altitude tunes the rule of thumb I was told by an EDGE tech is +.5 on the timing for every 2500' above sea level you should be good at +1 above the normal timing for your octane

As for Level 3... I don't get that throw you back in the seat feeling like I do with Level 2. Level 3 is great for long distance driving and passing, but not around town and I've never been able to smoke the tires with it...Or I just haven't found the right tune yet.

I'm running lvl3 cant smoke them but can spin them pretty good!
Im like you and like the lower end power being I drive downtown a lot. Ive thought about changing my back to lvl2 and keep my custom setting and see how it runs.

Great info thanks, I have found out that at 5500 feet for level 2 I am running 85 octane with no problems. I can also run level 3 at 87 octane with no problems (knocking, pinging etc) There is absolutly no mpg or horsepower difference whether I'm running 85 or 87 octane.

My truck doesn't seem to run any better on level 3. Level 2 has good pick and awesome TQ. Here are my latest settings :

WOT 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 @ 5100
shift 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 @ 0
Firm 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 @ +4
Rev Lim @ 5750
Gears 4.56
Tires 2682
Timing +2.5
Fuel 1.50
Idle +100

Level 2, 93 octane
No problems.

Lets see your Edge custom tunes

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've been searching the forum for some ideas of a good place to start with the custom tunes for the Edge but haven't found much out there. I know that a tune is proprietary to the truck and that the canned tune will always work, but when it comes to fine tuning you truck by creating a custom tune with the Edge I would like to see what all of you are doing to get those 0-60 times and good gas mileage...

Here's what I've found to smoke the tires on my truck...

Plain Jane K&N drop in filter (AF1 is on order)
93 Octane Fuel
Edge Evo EEF-2400
Level 2 custom tune
+1.52 WOT Fuel
+2.0 timing advance (I've found more low end torque with 2 rather than 3)
speed limiter set at 200mph (I hate speed limiters)
shift firmness 1-2@+12, 2-3@+12, 3-4@+6
I've been averaging about 18.2 MPG with this tune and I'll be trying 89 octane (minus the timing advance) on my next fill up.
I have never put it on a dyno, but judging by the seat of my pants method, it really gets up and goes (and scares my wife)

As for Level 3... I don't get that throw you back in the seat feeling like I do with Level 2. Level 3 is great for long distance driving and passing, but not around town and I've never been able to smoke the tires with it...Or I just haven't found the right tune yet.

So, lets see what custom tunes you came up with!

I used these and brought the power i had lost back from my fabtech lift w/ 35's on my 2006 King Ranch. Worked great.

Thanks,

Jim

ok guys, on my 2002 5.4 FX4
Maggie SI/SO exhaust, volant intake.
Lvl 2
* 1-2 Shift = 5100
* 2-3 Shift = 5100
* 3-4 Shift = 4800
* Rev Limiter = 5400
* Timing: +1.50
* WOT Fuel = 1.5
* Shift Firmness = 1-2 +6, 2-3 +6, 3-4 +4

it seems to have given me back more than what i lost goin to bigger tires. and it feels STRONG now!

and im thinking about changing tire size cuz i do have 285 nitto tg's, but im not sure what to change it to, im gonna try FX4adam's calculations, but i dont have a gps to check it. any tips on that guys?

* 1-2 Shift = 5075
* 2-3 Shift = 5075
* 3-4 Shift = 4800
* Rev Limiter = 5400
* Timing: +2.0
* WOT Fuel = 1.5
* Shift Firmness = 1-2 +6, 2-3 +5, 3-4 +3
* Tire Size= 2375MM (got a friend with GPS, and it was dead on for my truck at 2375 MM, i have 3.55 LS with 285-70-R17's)

i dropped almost a second off my 0-60 time along with gaining about .6 AMPG with this tune...i thought it was kind of wierd, unless .5 timing does that much....and with it set at 5100 it kinda seemed like it would wait longer to shift than at 5075(not hit the rev limiter, just rev before the shift, its a solid shift with no rev in between now)...im running 89 octane since its 8 -10 cents a gallon cheaper here(ethanol in iowa, not E85, its an ethanol mix)and havent heard any detonation for the 2 hours ive been drivin my truck solid. should i be worried about detonation? so i hope this is my tune! im very happy with it, truck runs a LOT stronger than it did!

crash_lucky13 your 3-4 shift points should be the lowest being its the weakest in the truck. The shift points you have listed almost seem backwards? Someone correct me if Im wrong. Just want you to be aware and would hate for you to mess anything up.

Shift Firmness = 1-2 +8, 2-3 +11, 3-4 +16

Question

Hey all, I am looking to compare tunes with anyone who has the 4.6 motor
(2004-or later model year, mine is a 2005.) I would like to compare apples to apples for lack of a better analogy. I feel like the 5.4 tunes you guys have posted are great, but want a better representation of what I can do with my 4.6 to get good results as well. Here is my custom tune so far. Let me know what you think.

LEVEL 2 CUSTOM PROGRAM
87/89 OCTANE (LITTLE BIT OF BOTH IN THE TANK)

WOT SHIFT RPM
1-2 5025
2-3 5025
3-4 4800

WOT SHIFT FIRMNESS
1-2 +16
2-3 +14
3-4 +12

REV LIMITER
5400

SPEED LIMITER
110 MPH

STOCK GEARS
3.55

AFTERMKT TIRE SIZE
2546mm, actual mm size is 2610mm, but compensate for 5% "squish" per EDGE

TIMING ADVANCE
.50 (USING 87 OCTANE FUEL) PROBBLY GO MORE WITH 89 OCTANE? What about 93 OCTANE?? whats the rule of thumb? (aside from listening for spark knock, I know that is the main issue)

WOT FUEL DELIVERY
1.35 (REMEMBER THIS IS LEVEL 2) SHOULD I GO MORE? KEEP IN MIND 4.6 ENGINE

IDLE RPM
125 (WHICH EQUATES TO 25% INCREASE FROM STOCK IDLE) 100 WOULD BE STOCK, CORRECT?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated... ASEMechanic (BILL), can you shed any light on the "Un-altered" Level 2 program??:o

A few things to remember when adjusting shifting....

WOT shift points RPMs are where the shift has been commanded, not when it is complete. A 1-2 shift commanded at 5200 RPM might actually not complete until 200-300 RPM later. It is important to remember this when setting shift points and especially when setting the rev limiter.

The 1-2 shift is going to be harder on the driveshaft and the axles due to the emount of torque multiplication through the transmission. Because of the amount of torque applied to the wheels, there is a more noticable "feel" when making adjustments to this shift. On the other hand, 3-4 shifts tend to be more stressful on the transmission mechanicals and have less "feel". Because the transmission is at a .6984 to 1 gear ratio in 4th, the amount of torque applied to the rear wheel is significantly lower. Keep this in mind when setting the shift firmness and shift RPM points.

Hope this helps.

Depends on what you want to know. Obviously I can't give away the Colonel's recipe, bet certainly don't mind answering a few questions about some of the tuning.

Bill,
you know alot more about this than i do. i JUST had my tranny rebuilt about 3 weeks ago. so my upper end should be set lower than 1-2?

what about the timing? until i save up the chips to get custom dyno tuned i'm forced to run with the edge. i'm not getting any pinging at the current level, just seems i should have some more power somewhere.

While we wait for Bill ... let's jaw ....

Crash - you are S/C'd right? If it were me, I'd try to stay out of boost until you get the scratch for some custom tuning. You are effectively off the grid as far as a stock calibration is concerned.

And yes - yer 3>4 should be lower than either yer 1>2 or 2>3. See F15D's settings (above) for example.

Bill - the DP-Tuner route might be what this youngin' needs lol
